A Sense of Humor

I mentioned in a previous post that our granddaughter has quite a sense of humor.  Here she is listening to something her daddy is saying.  Not sure what it was but she found it hilarious.

I like that story, Daddy.

Oh, that's a good one.
You really had me going there for a while.

Since she often wears rock band shirts and has so little hair many strangers think she is a boy.  They often remark, "What a shame such gorgeous eyes and eyelashes are wasted on a little boy."

My son would prefer that all toys be considered gender neutral, and he is determined to keep her from knowing about the Disney princesses for as long as possible.  She does have some tutus and loves to wear them.  They look a bit strange with her Nirvana tee shirt, but that look works for her and she carries it off very well.

People baffle me with their comments like the one you mention. Are beautiful eyes and lashes the exclusive property of girls? I raised my daughter in much the same way as your son - very gender ambiguous clothing and all kinds of toys. She found her way, on her own, to elaborate dress up and as an adult she is a girly girl who knows how to kick arse. She loves her make-up and hair-dos. Go figure. She did not get it from me!

Your grand daughter is adorable and obviously enjoys a good sense of humor. It will be a joy to watch her grow. BTW, I saw a sweet toddler boy last night at dinner walking around the dining room with his baby doll, complete with pink bottle. Lovin' it.

Sigh. I have a niece who is completely destroyed by the Disney culture, especially the princesses. She cannot carry on a single conversation without mentioning or role-playing one of them. The pervasiveness of Disney in America is cultish. And, I suspect, driven by laziness.

Your granddaughter is going to benefit from such a free and non-prescriptive upbringing.

She is so adorable! I love that she's princess-free at the moment.

What a beautiful child, and she is certainly learning the importance of enjoying what a parent says to her. Good for your family for providing her an environment of such values...which sadly will be put in the shade as she moves into school groupings...and finds the shiny glitter of Disney. It should not be avoided forever, or she'll feel she's missed something others seem to have enjoyed, saying from one who was given an "ivory tower kind of education."

She is adorable and I love her ease with laughing. Humor will get her through this complex world quite nicely. Parents who do not pigeon hole her will give her room to grow into her own unique self.

That big smile will follow her as she breaks hearts in the future … so much cuter than the Barbie doll look alikes. She is sure to brighten up your holidays.

She sounds like a happy little girl who is smart! I never do understand peoples' assumptions about girls. I like how your son is raising her - it sounds very familiar to me! She will be who she is meant to be, not what society expects of her!

She's adorable and the look totally works for her. And the sense of humor is obvious! Isn't it great? We pretty much avoid Disney princesses too. And I make a point of praising Josie for being smart or strong rather than pretty. Of course it will all go by the wayside at some point, I don't doubt. She has trucks, as well as stuffed animals but she's getting a doll baby for Christmas.

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Tara - Kudos to your daughter

Nance - Yes, unfortunately there is a finite time for protecting Violet from the princesses. At least it does appear that they are slowly becoming stronger and diverse.

Bug - Thanks

Barbara - Yes, they know Disney is so pervasive they can't keep her from them and their money-making schemes.

Patti - I totally agree

Ginnie - I do so wish we lived closer. She is a delight.

KB - I totally agree with you. My son wore a pink snowsuit when he was two. It was a great suit and had been a gift for his sister. Everyone felt obliged to mention what a cute little girl he was.

Vicki - Violet has a doll and loves it. Had she been a boy she would have had a doll as well.

Your granddaughter, Violet, is very cute and having a good sense of humor at an early age is great! As a child, I received dolls because my parents were of the generation that gave dolls to girls and cars to trucks to boys, so my brother got the coolest toys in my young mind. To this day, I have never bought a doll for our granddaughters, but stuffed toys are OK and the youngest grand, Lilliana, carries a small pink bunny she received for a birthday gift in December everywhere she goes now according to her mother.

Heaven forbid if a boy has nice eyelashes!! People are weird. Lolo was often referred to as a boy because she had little hair too. I love that Violet is so happy and funny...there's nothing better than that. A good sense of humor goes a long way. :)
I haven't blogged in a while and I'm supposed to be getting ready for 40 guests tonight.....just wanting to catch up with you and your family. Merry Christmas for HOT Florida to you!!
