LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

No Blood Moon for Us

While some of you enjoyed the thrill of an enormous red moon, the rest of us saw only clouds and rain.  It has been raining on and off since Friday.  More than six inches have fallen but the rain has been so steady and gentle there are no flash floods.  Just a marvelous drink of water for our trees as they approach winter.

We missed the moon but it was worth it.

The birds don't seem to be bothered too much by the rain.  We have domes atop all the bird feeders so the seeds stay dry.  Many of the birds will shelter there even after they have eaten their fill.

The Tufted Titmouse is so wet his tuft is flat against its head.

A White-breasted Nuthatch rests near the tree trunk.

It is still raining this morning, but we are expected clear skies later in the week.  For now, I enjoy sitting on the porch and watching the birds in the rain.

Just blogged moon pics over on Child of a Frosty Morning. Our skies cleared just in time. Alack, no rain...precious few drops in many days up here...the ground is hard as a brick. Maybe tomorrow we'll get some rain.

Sometimes it is just such a blessing when it rains ...
I do like the picture of the nuthatch.

We have enjoyed a fantastic Autumn (Fall) day in my part of the UK. The trees look glorious against an almost clear blue sky.

I hope you have a good week.

All the best Jan

I never complain about rain even if I am ankle deep in water. Been in too many droughts.
Sorry you didn't see the moon but neither did I. It was over cast here but 4 miles down the road a friend saw it clearly. I swear she and I live in different ecosystems. It can snow there and not here. Weird.

Sadly, we too missed the wonderful lunar eclipse due to cloud cover. BUT in our case, no rain. We are really dry, and all our trees could use a long drink before winter.

beautiful birds you've got there!

Your rain is coming in our direction, and I'm not going to complain either. The clouds kept us from seeing the eclipse too, next time, right? :-)

Have a good week!

I had anticipated since first hearing about it and it was so cloudy we couldn't even see a hint of the moon. *sigh

it was a clear night but I slept through so did not see the blood moon.

I looked at the moon before I went to bed and even then it was stunning.....magical for sure.

Images of the birds are very pretty.

Hope the rain dries up soon and the sun comes back.......although it sounds like you are enjoying the soft autumn rain :))

Neat little TMouse. And our tree could use a deep soak too...:)

Nice to see the birds finding food and shelter there. The moon rose in a narrow cloud bank here, so we didn't get to see the beginning of the eclipse. We did get to watch it as it ascended and became a beautiful red sphere. We're in southern CA, visiting with my mom. Not the best place to watch such phenomenon, but we did manage a nice view for a little while.

Like many, overcast skies shut us out, too. And after a soggy June, we're wishing for some daylong rains in NEO and other parts of Ohio after July, August, and now waning September have left us lacking.

I put up two stick-on window feeders to entertain me and my cats, and they are a constant gladness. Piper and Marlowe know not to worry any cardinals that arrive, and they regulate any seed-throwing or bickering sparrows. We get a surprising number of goldfinches at this sunflower seed feeder, despite a perfectly nice nyjer seed feeder close by. Go figure.

Love the crestfallen tufted titmouse. He's still adorable.

No blood moon for us either but the rain was so welcome. And continues to be, even though mildew is flourishing in the nooks and crannies of our house.

We barely glimpsed the blood moon but I know we were lucky to see it! That poor tufted titmouse (my mom's favorite bird)... he needs a nice sunny day to dry out his tuft!

We saw only clouds as well. No rain though.

Best,

Very misty here but nothing like the heavy rain on Tuesday. I guess you are far West of the hurricane threat but I'm a little apprehensive. Time will tell.
I love your bird pictures.

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Linthead - You got some great pictures of the moon.

KB - At least you did get a few nice shots. And kudos for lying in the grass waiting for another glimpse.

Ginnie - No rain from the hurricane, but a massive front has stalled and it dumping us with rain.
