LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

The Mountains in May

The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.
Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.
Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh."
- Philip Larkin, The Trees

"The air is like a butterfly
With frail blue wings.
The happy earth looks at the sky
And sings."
- Joyce Kilmer

"Sweet May hath come to love us,
Flowers, trees, their blossoms don;
And through the blue heavens above us
The very clouds move on."
- Heinrich Heine

"The world's favorite season is the spring.
All things seem possible in May."
- Edwin Way Teale

So when the earth is alive with gods,
And the lusty ploughman breaks the sod,
And the grass sings in the meadows,
And the flowers smile in the shadows,
Sits my heart at ease,
Hearing the song of the leas,
Singing the songs of the meadows."
- Robert Louis Stevenson

"It was such a spring day as breathes into a man an ineffable yearning, a painful sweetness, a longing that makes him stand motionless, looking at the leaves or grass, and fling out his arms to embrace he knows not what."- John Galsworthy

"Spring is God's way of saying,'One more time!' "
- Robert Orben

Carolyn...this was beautiful!
I cannot get the mountains off my mind after attending Jeff Biggers presentation. Do you know that 500 applachian mountaintops have been removed forever? You need to get his book " The United States of Appalachia"!

Carolyn,
Go to www.bloggerchoiceawards.com In the search bar enter ncmountainwoman - this should take you to a page that displays a badge code. Copy and paste that code into the html gadget in your page layout. The badge should display in your sidebar and have a link to a voting page. You can also add a text gadget directing your followers to click on the link to vote. Good Luck. In my opinion your blog is in the top five of all photo blogs I have seen. Hope this helps. If not- let me know.

Hi Carolyn, We're home ---and actually we came near you last Sunday. We were waterfalling --and went to Dupont Forest to see Bridal Veil Falls (which we didn't see the first time there). I didn't know we were going to be that close--or I would have emailed you and gotten your phone number --just to say HI. Next time I'll be a little more organized.

Anyhow we went through Brevard and went north on 276 to the Pisgah area. We went on north to Waynesville and then over to Cherokee and over the mountain from there. SAW lots of waterfalls with lots of water--so that made for a great Mother's Day.

Looks like you have been birding most of the week. How great that you found a rare bird. Amazing!!!!!

Love your mountain pictures. I think you are truly in heaven there!!!! Carol Murdock (Writer's Porch) was in Flat Rock on Mother's Day and we passed through there. Small world, isn't it????

Hugs,
Betsy

Carolyn, these are fantastic! I always think of the NC mountains as beautiful in the fall, but I tend to forget about the other seasons. As my cousin Jason would say, "Strong work!"

Thanks for your nice note on my blog.
We have a piece of property in Tuckasegee...in NC, near Sylva. I love, love, love it there!!!! Compared to living in South Florida, it is a different country. :)

Love the scenery and poems. Am enjoying working at my desk today and look out over the mountains and the spring growth (though my allergies complain for a few weeks every spring)! The rain this spring has certainly helped.

I love mountains too. Yours are just right. Not as intimidating as those Rocky ones with snow on top in July

Begin afresh, afresh...
Each spring we see that we too have an opportunity to turn a new leaf.
Wonderful photos!

Thanks for commenting, everyone.

Helen - Thank goodness, NC does not allow mountaintop coal retrieval. Such a frightening thing.

Betsy - You were indeed close to our home. Drop in next time.

Rae - Thank you so much for the award. And thanks for the kind words.

Ruth - "Begin afresh, begin afresh" becomes my mantra every spring.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. The mountains, like the sea near me will never have two days exactly alike. There's always a new color, a breeze, a cloud pattern that changes everything!

Oh, and your photography is spectacular!

Spectacular! I love the mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway, though it's been years since I've seen them. The clouds are stunning against the blue skies, casting shadows on the mountains.

Hope you had a picnic because it looks like picnic weather to me : )
