We Love Our Lucy

I've been talking lately about our Lucy getting older, as we are all wont to do.  So I pulled out some old photographs of her from 2005, the year we got her.  She was a tiny little fluff ball and like all puppies, just as cute as could be.

Little Lucy on her first day with us.

The following is one of my favorite photographs of the pair that came to be known as the "Golden Girls.'  Ellie was a year old when Lucy came to live with us.

Quite a difference in size

This photograph was taken a week or so later.  Notice the lush green yard, with flowers all around.  Not seen are the deck, the brick patio and flower gardens.  Yes, absolutely typical suburbia.  Great for the children as they grew up and for puppies as well.

Our house today is so very different.  A house with no grass and a backyard that is a forest.  Both excellent locations and both perfect for their times.

Ellie was so patient with this little newcomer.

The day the veterinarian told us it was all right for Ellie to engage in play with Lucy was wonderful.  It was almost as if Ellie knew Lucy was big enough to take it.  Lucy came running and jumped on Ellie.  And Ellie flipped Lucy a somersault in the grass.  Lucy was totally surprised at this new behavior and she had a lot more respect for her big sister after that.

Now Lucy loves to soak up the sun.  She moves around to catch the sun puddles which seem to warm her old bones.

One of her favorite spots catches the early morning sun.

I am still avoiding the TV news shows and pick up bits and pieces from the Internet.  I go for longer walks every day and a song I do not own plays in my head.  It's Louis Armstrong singing "What a wonderful world" in his marvelously gravelly voice.

In spite of all the politics, in spite of everything, it is indeed a wonderful world.

Two quotes for today.  The first from a former Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes:

"The great thing in the world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving."

The other is from humorist Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain:

I hate to hear people say this Judge will vote so and so, because he is a Democrat -- and this one so and so because he is a Republican.
It is shameful.
The Judges have the Constitution for their guidance; they have no right to any politics save the politics of rigid right and justice when they are sitting in judgment upon the great matters that come before them.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK, EVERYONE

ENJOY THIS WONDERFUL WORLD

These pictures melt my heart! Especially the one where Lucy is standing on her hind legs begging Ellie to play. Little Golden puppies are the most adorable things, aren't they?

I'm still watching the news, only from my favorite PBS News Hour. The rest is blather and is making my head explode. I'd get out and walk more but my health currently prevents it, but soon I'll be back on track.

Meanwhile, I read the NY Times and Atlantic Monthly, and pray that Mr. Mueller leads us out of the darkness. What else can we do? Ready to vote!!

Love seeing these old photos of Ellie and Lucy. Such sweet friends they were. There's a line in the song "Spring Wind" by Greg Brown, "My friends are getting older, so I guess I must be too..." Yes, here we are older everyday.

You are right on... I've been down all day about the news but it IS a wonderful world. I love seeing the photos of Ellie and Lucy. Ellie was a wonderful big sister. And I love seeing Lucy looking so content in the sunshine.

Keep getting stronger. That makes me smile!

It is, indeed, a wonderful world. And puppies are part of it.

Loved seeing Ellie being so tolerant of Lucy. You can tell it took control. I so hope Samuel is correct.

Adorable pictures and it was wonderful to see (and remember) Ellie. Thanks for the photos and also reminding me of the Louis Armstrong song … I needed that.

What adorable, sweet photos and what sweet and precious memories to go with them.

I've been Kentucky the last several days, and I've welcomed the break from the news. But when I get back, I will continue to help campaign for my candidates in Virginia.

I'm glad to hear your walks are lengthening. Doesn't it feel good to get out--and under your own power? It's a surge of contentment with oneself. I'm with you on creating my own Centre Of Zen, a necessity in these times.

Such beautiful images of Ellie and Lucy.
Dear little pup and Ellie the gentle giant.
I understand warming old bones :))

My Mother said to me two days before she passed away
"Cheryl, it is still a beautiful world, enjoy it while you can."
These words stay with me and I do. Each and every moment.

She was such an adorable little peanut! Our Cocoa just had her 13th birthday and I still remember when she was such an active little girl....now, mostly sleeping is on her agenda.
Love the quotes and I hope YOU are doing well. Sending good thoughts your way. XO

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Tara - Yes. The vote. But thanks to the recent SCOTUS ruling and GOP governors, voters are being severely restricted in GA and some of the western states. Not fair. Not fair at all.

Robin - Oh yes. Strange how we are all getting older. But since I've changed chemo, I feel as if I'm getting younger.

Far Side - Yes, Ellie was so very good with Lucy. She's been dead since 2013 and I still miss her every single day, just as I know you miss Chance.

KB - Thanks. I try to do a bit more every day. I'm beginning to have days when I actually feel good all day.

Vicki - Yes, dogs and grandchildren make it ever so much more wonderful.

Patti - Me too.

Ginnie - Not sure why, but now that song goes through my head every time a take a walk. Boosts me up for sure.

Kim - We all need a respite from the news every now and then. We do pay a price for keeping informed, don't we?

Nance - Thanks. Yes indeed. It feels wonderful to be more independent and makes me appreciate even the smallest of tasks that I can now do.

Cheryl - I will now carry your dear mother's words with me as well.

Suz - Thanks. Hope you fared all right during the storm.

Beatrice - A circus indeed. So many times my husband will look at me and say, "Filler. It's all filler. No real news."

Joared - Thanks. It is truly wonderful to get outside again. Even to chat with neighbors again.
