LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

We Love Our Lucy

Much of North Carolina sustained significant damage from Hurricane Florence.  Areas of the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont suffered major flooding from the rain associated with the slow moving storm.  All of the river basins flooded, even those here in the mountains near the Eastern Continental Divide where the waters begin.  The current death toll from Florence is 42, but the numbers may climb as the waters recede.

We were well-prepared but fortunately, predictions of rain and wind in our area were vastly  overestimated.  We received rain, but not in heavy volumes.  We had some flooding and power outages but far less than predicted.  And for that we are extremely grateful.  Our daughter arrived for a visit before the storm and left after the storm and we are also grateful for that.  We had a lovely visit although the weather kept us inside much of the time.

Lucy was totally unconcerned about the weather.  As long as we didn't make her go out in the rain, she was happy.  As she ages, she wants and needs less and less exercise.  She would probably like to have larger food portions, but we certainly don't want her older joints to bear more weight so we have adjusted her diet to fit her reduced exercise.  Her veterinarian is very pleased with her health for a Golden Retriever who has celebrated her twelfth birthday. She still gets excited about our daughter's visits and she still runs free every now and then, albeit for shorter spurts and less often.  All in all she is a very happy dog.

She does rest in some rather unusual places

And just like her owners, she is getting a lot of gray.
(NOTE:  One of her owners is finally growing hair!  Hooray!)

Today is  World Peace Day, declared by the United Nations in 1982.  A day in which the world would be devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace within and among nations and peoples.  Please pause for a few moments and think about what can be done to bring about peace within our Nation.  We are sorely in need of more peace among our citizens and neighbors.  Think also about peace among all the others who share this planet with us.  We are not alone and what affects one affects us all.

Today's quote is from the Dalai Lama XIV:

“Peace does not mean an absence of conflicts; differences will always be there. Peace means solving these differences through peaceful means; through dialogue, education, knowledge; and through humane ways.”

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND
AND A BETTER WEEK AHEAD

Lucy is such a beauty. Hard to imagine she's already 12 years old. That's what such good love and attentiveness brings. Glad to know you were mostly spared by the storm. As the president said, it was pretty wet "from the standpoint of water." Hard to imagine, but true. Yes to peace in every way.

I truly wish we were more geared toward peace than conflict. But apparently it goes against our natures to be nice (not that I'm excusing our horrible behavior). Sometimes I think the human race just sucks in general. Sigh.

However, there are wonderful people in the world and a special person is growing hair again, so all is not entirely wrong with the world!

I am happy to know that you are seeing some hair growth! That must feel comforting and affirming.

What a terrific picture of Dog Nose Beneath Chair. That's the kind of photo I'd have enlarged and hanging on my wall or placed on my mantel. It's just Perfect.

So happy you dodged the big bullet. I got a little worried for you when they talked about mud slides in the mountains. Love it when they over estimate.
Lucy is getting a bit grey and I am delighted that you are getting some hair back. Is it coming in curly as often happens?

Hooray for hair, and hooray that you are safe! I was thinking of you and was hoping you wouldn't be affected by the storm. It's so tragic and sad to see the loss on so many levels. But our pups do have a way of giving us a lift and provide comfort at just the right moment and make us smile too; I love that nose! :-)

Take care!!

Lucy reminds me of Nella. She is in her 13th year and slowly down. Sadly she is also losing her sight. None the less she has a wonderful life here.

I am so pleased the storm was not as bad as predicted.
What a relief.

Peace of earth, if only.
It is a beautiful quote.

I love your photos of Lucy. Also, your words of peace. So glad you fared as well as you did in the wake of Florence. I'm so glad it's behind us.

I am glad that Florence wasn't too rough on you. I was wondering... Lucy really doesn't look 12. I think that you keeping her at a good weight goes a long way toward keeping her young.

As for peace, it feels a long distance away to me. Sorry to be such a downer but watching the behavior surrounding the Supreme Court nominee and his accuser has made me sick.

Have a great week - Enjoy Lucy and autumn!

Glad to read that Hurricane Florence did not hit your area hard as it did in so many parts of NC. It was so sad to see the devastation cause by the storm surges and flooding aftermath. Some days it seems like peace is more unattainable than others.

I'm so pleased the storm was not as bad as predicted for you, but my thoughts go to all those who have been affected.

I always enjoy seeing the pictures of Lucy she really is a sweetheart.

Have a good week.

All the best Jan

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Robin - Thanks. Yes, we are very lucky to have avoided much of Florence's wrath.

Bug - It's true what they say, "the more I am around people, the more I love my dog." And you are right...all is not lost. There are still plenty of good people out there.

Nance - Yes, it feels so nice to have new hair growth. I've seen a few people (not many) who deliberately cut their hair this short and it's growing fast. Lucy's nose is often seen under the chair. Silly thing.

Patti - My hair has always had a good bit of curl. Right now it's too short to tell if it will be curly or not. Before it came out, it turned snow white. It seems to be coming back in with its salt and pepper color like before.

Kim - Thanks a lot. We do feel fortunate to have been spared.

Cheryl - Lucy's eyesight seems to be fine. I was concerned about her hearing but the other day I was chopping some carrots and she came all the way upstairs to get a few carrot pieces so she heard that pretty well. She can hear "want a treat" just fine.

Ginnie - Sorry you got a harder hit from the storm.

KB - We learned when we first got Ellie that Goldens have no satiety center. She plumped up before our eyes. So we carefully measured after that. Our vet likes older dogs to be just a tad "underweight." And I think the reasoning is good. Oh, the Kavanaugh hearings are such a farce. He acts like an entitled preppy adolescent rather than a judge. But the outcome has already been decided no matter what happens today.

Beatrice - I agree. Sometimes it is indeed hard to find peace.

Jan - Thanks. And thanks for the great recipes you post. I often try them and each has been delicious.

Jored - Thanks. It is always so nice to have her visit.
