LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Another Friday

We are having some blessedly uneventful days.  Typical August weather with almost daily thunderstorms.  One of them brought us lots of hail after the rain.  I do enjoy summer storms and love to look out at them.  Our screened porch is the perfect place to enjoy the storms.

No news on the dog front, so once again I will share our granddaughter with some random pictures and a short video.

For some reason, she decided to eat her snack of Goldfish with a fork.  She first tried to spear them but that resulted in breaking them into pieces.  So she used the fork to delicately scoop them up one by one and put them in her mouth,

Why not use a fork?
You tried often enough to get me to use one.

She is pretty fearless in most instances.  She loves the water and jumps into the pool without hesitation.  They have a pool so while they never let her outside alone, it is still important that she is safe in the water should she fall in.  They would never trust a toddler's swimming ability, but it's good to know they would have several safe seconds to get her out in case of an accident.  She loves to jump and go under the water, trusting that the waiting arms will catch her when she bobs up.  It won't be long before she will be able to shake her head and swim off.

Ready?  Set? Go!
[A phrase she learned from Grammy during her last visit]

Here is a short video of Violet rather high on a jungle gym at a nearby park.  She is determined and careful, but it always makes her daddy nervous.  (Best to click icon for full screen on bottom right.)

Oh, I think I can do this.

At the State Fair she didn't get any of the good deep-fat-fried yummies her daddy ate, but she did get her first pony ride.

She loves to swing.  While she was swinging one of favorite "uncles" came in sight and this was her reaction.
Oh, Lookee!

Today's first quote comes from from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
"It is a happy talent to know how to play."

And from our beloved Fred Rogers:
"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning.
But for children, play IS serious learning.
Play is really the work of childhood."

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK, EVERYONE!

LEARN HOW TO PLAY AGAIN

AND FIND TIME TO DO IT

Wonderful photos. She really looks so delightfully happy exploring her world. I couldn't get the video to play (I think it's my computer settings).

So fun that you share your grandbaby with us...and remind us all that play is the work of learning! Still true I'd venture to surmise!

She really is fearless which means she keeps her Mom and the rest of the family busy watching her. Got a feeling there is some greatness in that child.

I LOVE her boots! So cute! And that face when she sees her "uncle" - she's going to be so much fun to watch grow up.

And what a darling sweetie she is! As to playing I'm a strong believer that being read stories before age 5 and playing shapes our life to a great extent. These days though much of my playing takes place with many friends in dementia land. If I can get many of the residents to laugh and that includes my wife, I consider were all much better for it. :-)

The Fred Rogers quote is so wise and so very important and true. Children need active play. With it, they learn problem solving, spatial reasoning, and so much more. It helps them to trust their own command of their bodies.

She's developing a healthy autonomy. What a great gift.

what fun she is! I love that she is so adventurous and wears darling pink boots, too. Fred Rogers is spot on, as he usually is. We, like the animals in the wild, learn our life lessons when we play. Little brains just soaking it all up.

Always good to see her and hear of her -- what a life she has and will have!

Difficult to believe we all started out this way, isn't it?

What fun to see the video of Violet and those great pink boots. It must be something for young children to love wearing boots as in the past week, I have seen several of them in places we've traveled. I really liked her expression when she spotted her uncle. Also, how wise of her parents to watch her near the pool.

She is a little daredevil!! The video also made me nervous, but I understand that we have to let them have adventures too. I'm super impressed with her daredevil outfit of a skirt and boots; Violet has style!
Have a great day.

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Vicki - I have a feeling she might have chosen her outfit that day.

Robin - Sorry you couldn't see Violet stepping on the gym bridge with her pink cowgirl boots. She is indeed a pretty happy-go-lucky little girl.

Barbara - When I was on pediatric rotation it was written in our heads, "Play is a child's work."

Patti - She is indeed a very active little girl and keeps everyone on their toes and often on edge.

Bug - She does have such an expressive face. The angry is just as expressive in its own way as the delighted.

Troutbirder - I'll bet they love you at the memory care place. I can imagine the clever things you come up with and I'm sure it makes everyone happier.

Nance - Yes. She already insists on climbing up and sliding down the 12-foot slide now. My son says he just stands at the bottom, praying he can catch her if she falls. He's afraid to take a video.

Tara - Sometimes I look at her and wonder what is going through that little mind of hers.

Ginnie - She is such a ham and she loves the camera.

Beatrice - It does seem as if there are more boots around. She loves shoes of all kinds. And takes them off and puts them back on time and again.

Suz - She's a fashionista for sure, isn't she? One day it's a tutu and the next day it's a heavy metal tee shirt.
