LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

When Fridays Were Even More Golden

I think of our Ellie every day.  But recently she has been on my mind more than usual.  Perhaps it is because of a dream I had several weeks ago.  I dreamed Ellie and I were in a beautiful meadow amidst a profusion of wildflowers.  I wanted to photograph her among the flowers but she kept following me.  Then she looked at me and said (animals talk in my dreams) that she had been away from me for too long and she was not going to leave my side.  It was a sweet dream of my sweet girl.

Ellie was older by two years and she and Lucy were never far apart.  Here are some photographs of the two Golden Girls.

Running in tandem up and down the stairs to a dock on the lake

Patiently waiting at a down/stay while I answered the door.

Running like mad through a local cemetery.
Ellie was a little bigger and a lot faster.

 Taking a little break

Snoozing in the sun with Ellie serving as Lucy's pillow.

Friends and neighbors ask us regularly why we don't get another dog.  There are several reasons.  Our house is not well designed for training a puppy so our next dog will be an adult.  While Lucy is definitely friendly with other dogs, she never enjoyed playing with them as much as Ellie did.  At the dog park, Lucy tended to gravitate from owner to owner while Ellie romped with the other dogs.  Bringing in the wrong dog would be devastating to Lucy, especially as she is getting older.  Last (but not least) we plan to move into a comprehensive retirement community within the next five years or so.  We hope to be independent and active there and if Lucy is no longer with us we will definitely get another dog.  Our home would never be complete without a dog.  But we fear disrupting Lucy's happy life by bringing in another dog right now and we won't take that chance.

So we have our Lucy, our sweet and goofy Lucy.  And the memories of our wonderful Ellie.  And for now that is enough.

Today's quote is from Omar Kayyam:

"Be happy for this moment.
This moment is your life."

HAVE A MOST WONDERFUL WEEKEND AND REMEMBER THIS MOMENT IS YOUR LIFE

A lovely dream about your beautiful Ellie. I like how you are considering Lucy's needs and disposition when thinking about getting another dog. When the right dog at the right time comes along, it will be perfect!

A lovely dream...thanks for sharing it, and these pictures of sweet Ellie. You are content in the moment...that most certainly is enough. Love, M

A great dream and clear thinking about the future. We tried a mix of one of my elder hunting dogs and a pup once. It didn't work....

I think we share our lives with our pets, and your consideration of yours proves the level of respect and love you have for Lucy as well as Ellie still.

That is such a touching and sweet dream. Thank you for sharing it. You make me wish that I could remember my dreams.

I think you're doing the best thing for Lucy, and that's the most noble thing you can do.

Thanks for letting us see the golden girls together in your photos. What a wonderful era when the two were both with you.

What a beautiful dream, that I don't think was a dream, but a message from your precious and beloved girl.

I agree with you about another dog. We waited until the time was right to add a puppy, considering all the dogs we had at the time. Too often people don't, and I have a great amount of respect for those like you that do -- Besides, I've a feeling that Lucy may enjoy being "the star!" :-)

Awwww, what a sweet dream. (wish I could remember mine) I would love to have another dog, but hubby is afraid it might outlive us. I miss mine so much and especially since the kids are grown and have moved away with the grandchildren and I don't see them much. You are so fortunate to have your sweet Lucy.

I love seeing the GGs together. And understand why getting another dog now could be tricky.

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

KB - Remembering dreams is often a great thing. But sometimes it leaves one troubled all day.

Kim - I love that thought.

Good dreams can leave us smiling, when we can remember them. And hopefully yours did that. Your reasonings for not getting a new dog are well considered ones and sure that Lucy appreciates them as well.
