Here we are in mid-August and the afternoon rain continues. Now it is accompanied by much cooler than normal temperatures. Yesterday's high was only 62 and this weekend is expected to break records. There is little doubt that this year's weather has been the strangest in my memory.
While the Golden Girls do not like the rain, they are delighted and energized by the cooler temperatures. They wake up ready to romp.
Here they come running down the driveway.

You have likely read about our fair state or seen us in the national spotlight. Our governor signed the oppressive voting legislation into law. (Thank you SCOTUS! First you allowed Citizen's United to buy our State election and then you struck down parts of the Voting Rights Act.) Fortunately, the people are mobilizing and the protests are turning into action.
A quote has been in my mind recently. It is frequently attributed to Helen Keller and other times said to be an anonymous one. The words vary somewhat, but it surely speaks to all of us:
"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and even if I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something I can do.
On this cool and rainy weekend, my neighbor is hosting her three grandsons (ages 7, 13, 15), each of whom is bringing a friend! She is going to try convince them that Sliding Rock (here) has been declared a Polar Bear test of courage for young men. That mountain water is FRIGID in the sun and high temperatures. I cannot imagine it in 60-degree cloudy weather. So I'll not complain about being indoors knitting or reading this weekend.
Whatever your plans or weather:
HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE WEEKEND, EVERYONE!!!

Hi, I understand about your weather-it has been different all over the country; I think we are feeling fall in the air here. Seems way to early though. Hope you enjoy your weekend!
Hugs, Noreen
We seem to be heading to fall in mid-August. I was (still am) embarrassed by our governor, but doggone, yours has surely taken the cake for sheer conservative audacity. Unfortunately, the SCOTUS has at times proved to be an embarrassment, as well, historically speaking. We live in one of those times. Your quote reminds me of Thoreau! He said something very similar. I LOVE the pic of Lucy flying!!! I will end on that very happy note.
Yes, from Civil Disobedience: "A man has not everything to do, but something; and because he cannot do everything, it is not necessary that he should do something wrong." This from a man who lived in the time of slavery, the Taney Supreme Court, unjust war with Mexico, etc. Ugh. Also, I forgot to mention that I have been down the Sliding Rock a few times...that is one bumpy ride with a Polar Plunge at the end, for sure!
My girls LOVED sliding rock! It was painful for me to watch thinking of all the parts of my body that could be harmed.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend too!
Wilmington has been getting rain also, with more in the forecast. Just this morning my husband was giving me more details about the voter restrictions. To our way of thinking, this is Jim Crow II.
LOVE the photos of your beautiful girls!!
And I agree with you about the weather--Ours is the same here in Northern VA, and I wonder what the winter will bring?
I am watching the events in your state very closely as is everyone--I hope those against what your Governor have done, find their voice and don't give up!!
Enjoy your weekend--What fun "slippery rock" is--To be young again!! :-)!!!
Well, you probably already know I went to Mountain Moral Monday in Asheville (see my blog Living in Black Mountain) and I agree that we voters need to make whatever differences we can.
Lovely dogs!
It has indeed been a strange summer, but the cooler temps agree with me. We have had little rain the past month and my newly seeded lawn has gone kaput despite watering it. I read about your governor signing the new voter law. I was not surprised. He seems to have a penchant for enacting unfavorable legislation.
I can't stop thinking about some energizing cooler weather. 62 sounds heavenly!
Enjoy your weekend!
Your weather sounds cool and delightful, but also a little overly wet like the great northwest. I hope the clouds move on and the temps stay cool and beautiful.
I love the cool weather for biking but unfortunately for our ethanol farmer a very late spring planting and cool weather is not helping the corn crop at all....
Those girls look so joyous when they come barreling down the driveway :)
Thanks for my golden fix.
We are having similar cool weather. I'm loving it.
So glad there is a back lash building. That is the only way to stop the ones in power. Votes and voices do count.
It sure looks like the Golden Girls enjoy those cool temps! It must be a relief from the heat. Believe it or not, we were in a snowstorm during our mountain trip!
I have been hearing about your state... and I'm so glad to hear that the people are taking action. I hope it works.
I saw you when I was visiting Nananor and loved the name of your blog so thought I'd pop over and see you. Your photos of the mountains and the wildlife are just lovely. Love the woodpeckers! We have Greater Spotted ones that visit us in the winter here in Wales when I put out bird seed. They are very shy and any movement sends them off but I managed to get some lovely shots last winter! Your dogs are so beautiful and look so good natured! Nice to meet you! Joan
I love the picture of your joyous girl romping in the cool air!
As to NC ... I am embarassed to be living here and can't stand that superior, snide smirk that Governor McCrory bestows on us. I pray that the protests bring action and hope that the mid term elections will reflect how so many of us feel. I was so proud of our State in 2008 ... it must have shocked the right wingers into mobilizing the forces and I hope it can be turned around.
Thanks for your comments, everyone.
Linthead - Intersting about Thoreau. Yes, in time past as well as now the SCOTUS has made a mockery of justice.
Regenia - I fear you are absolutely correct. And it saddens me.
B - Yes, I did see your blog on the Monday March. Kudos to you and your group.
Joan - thanks for dropping by. Hope things are well in Wales.
Ginnie - Don't you just want to smack that condescending grin off his face?
Our weather has been so crazy. I kind of liked the cooler temps....now that it is hot again.
