Another Little Woodpecker

Regular readers know that our woods are filled with several types of woodpeckers.  One of my favorites is the Red-bellied Woodpecker.  We have two pairs of them and love catching a glimpse of their fledglings.  The fledglings do not have any red on them, either on their bellies or their heads.  I assume this makes it all the better to hide from predators.  The little ones have gray heads and unlike the Pileated Woodpeckers, the Red-bellied fledglings are considerably smaller than the adults.

Oh, so sweet!

I hope to get a photograph of the parent feeding this little one.  But it's a matter of patience and luck, as are most things in life.

Now these we have - so cute!

Such a cutie. You are most likely right about the lack of color on the fledglings. Makes sense.

I was at a dinner party last weekend, and we were talking about woodpeckers. Our hosts had a male woodpecker who several years in a row would drum on their metal chimney shield to attract the ladies.

I have no doubts your patience will pay off!

We had a similar little one here following the parents several weeks ago. No longer as our neighbors now have several cats and kittens. Without Baron to deter their visits I have seen them ill three little Downies and a Robin plus who knows how many others in our yard. They seem to believe this acceptable because they are "outside cats" and they also "feed the birds." I am very very unhappy with this situation...:(

I, too, hope you get a feeding picture. This one's a beauty.

Aw, so sweet! You have such an amazing variety of birds. I'm jealous.

Watching the birds at our feeders is now a daily activity since they were relocated to be close to the dining room window. We share meals together in a manner of speaking. Lately, I have watched blue jay fledglings being fed by parents.

So lovely to see this fledgling. You really do have a yard full of beautiful woodpeckers. Lucky lucky!!

Awww! I love it. I love seeing them out back. And only someone who has pileateds would think red-bellies are little, lol! Our other common woodpecker here in OH is the downy, so the red bellies look huge in comparison, even the babies.
