Rainy Day Birds

It's still raining here in the mountains.  And the weather is cooler than normal.  I love it.  Great for catching up on videos or books.

I have no idea how the birds feel about the rain.  They are quite active but some of them do look a bit miserable.  And the smaller the bird, the more miserable it seems to look.  A Ruby-throated Hummingbird sits on a dead branch, totally exposed to the rain.

Poor little hummingbird looks soaked and forlorn

Wonder if this maneuver is to dry its wings

I hope this bird has a nest that is well sheltered from the rain.  The weather forecast calls for more showers and thunderstorms this evening and tonight with afternoon storms all week.  So we'll put on our raincoats and carry on.

Me, too, hope that little one gets dry and finds your feeder (I vaguely remember you feed birds!)...it looks like it's pouring outside, but is just sitting humid, muggy and very dark. Busy inside day!

I too think of how the animals survive wet weather. Do they look at it as a bath or a bother?

Love the little hummer!!! I know...I think the same things. I've been amused watching our toads when it rains...they head for higher ground and watch the rain from shelter, even in daylight. I think the rain bothers birds a bit...they like baths but they also like to shake dry after. I've had no chance to shoot hummers this year...they are around and feed at my neighbor's feeders, but I haven't stalked them...yet. Enjoy your cool, wet mountains!

Poor little thing! They need rain gear.
I saw one of those funny e-cards this weekend that said something like: "What if birds aren't actually singing…what if they are afraid of heights and they are CRYING in fear?!?"
Made me laugh.

Poor hummingbird.....I love that last image, it looks so forlorn.
Perhaps you need to hand out some mini umbrellas :)

I wonder about them, too. The little hummer does indeed look forlorn.

Right now I'm loving the goldfinches at our feeders. They can make even a gloomy day like today look brighter.

You have had alot more rain than we have.. We are still about 4 inches behind where we should be... BUT--I do love the cooler weather. Our weatherman said last night that there may be another cool front coming soon... Yeah!

Our birds are always VERY active at the feeders on rainy days...

Hugs,
Betsy

That hummer does look bedraggled, but I'm going to pretend that it's actually Fred Astair :)

Great captures! I'm sorry for the birds but how welcome the rain has been!

I remember photographing hummingbirds in the snow. They over-wintered in Grass Valley. I was shocked. Yet, they really did manage to survive and thrive. Not sure how, though. I think droughts are much harder on critters than rainfall.

Only we humans would worry about little birds in the rain -- they have been doing it for, oh, 150 MILLION years! :-)

I'd love a good rain right about now. Alas, not in California.
