Liberty and Justice

Today we celebrate our country's birthday.  It's a day for remembering all those who sacrificed to give us the liberty and justice we enjoy today.

And so we salute them.

Today's quote is by Emma Lazarus and is the inscription on the Statue of Liberty:

Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

HAVE A WONDERFUL INDEPENDENCE DAY AND A GREAT WEEKEND, EVERYONE!

Happy Independence Day to you, my friend. I enjoyed the quote. I'd forgotten it over the years since visiting there.

A perfect post for today! I hope your 4th has been an enjoyable one, and you've not gotten clobbered by Arthur--We're on the very, very edge of it, and only got the winds and a little rain, which has made today a perfect one.

Beautiful. Aren't we lucky to have been born in this country?? I think yes.

Not sure if you know this or not, but your header photo is SO big now, it's much bigger than it used to be. I noticed it a while ago…it's not a bad thing, but I don't' think it is as you intended. It doesn't quite fit on the page anymore.

Have a great weekend!

yes, so true. and many other truths, too, which make me humble. Reading what Frederick Douglass has to say on the topic of Independence Day is sobering, and invites us to consider all our countrymen and women.

We have a complex history -- the best and worst of the human race.

The Lazarus quote contains such lovely words ... it's too bad that so many of our countrymen and women don't abide by them.
