LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays are Golden

There are so many wonderful things about living in a small town. The Transylvania Times is our local newspaper, published twice a week. There are no comics in our little paper. Truth be told, we really don't need any. Several laughs can always be found in the "Letters to the Editor" section. Other articles also bring forth chuckles. Here is something in yesterday's paper that caught my eye and made me smile because of its simple truth:

"The Dunn's Creek Baptist Church 'Kiss a Pig Contest' to raise money for a climbing wall for the church playground has been changed to 'Kiss a Goat Contest' because they could not find a pig and Aaron Masters has a goat."

As much fun as we have with the newspaper, it is brief and soon over. The fun we have with the Golden Girls lasts all day, every day. Here they are running down the driveway. They had been outside for less than five minutes, yet when they saw me they ran over as if they hadn't seen me for days. Now where else do you get that kind of loving attention simply for being there?

The girls have a little fracas, but it is very short-lived. It's just too hot to do much wrestling.

Finally they rest, looking like bookends.

We've had some very warm (almost record-setting) temperatures this past week. The air is heavy and quite uncomfortable. Afternoon thunderstorms (some of them severe) have been the order of the day. Fortunately, neither of our dogs is upset by thunder or lightning. In fact, they love to sit with us on the screened porch and watch the storm.
They ultimately get bored with the storm. Ellie plops on the floor looking a bit depressed.

Lucy keeps vigil at the deck door. She loves watching the rain splatter on the wood.

Father's Day occurs this Sunday on the Summer Solstice. In the US we are rapidly approaching the longest day of the year, although we will have plenty of light for several months to come. Summertime will be "official" soon and we will quickly forget our complaining about the cold weather as we complain about the heat.
HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND. HONOR THE MEN WHO PLAYED SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN YOUR LIFE, BE THEY YOUR FATHERS OR OTHERS. HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY WEEKEND AND PUT YOUR STRESS ON HOLD FOR AWHILE.

We had a wicked storm this morning that made the windows vibrate. I got up and went on the porch to look at the skies. I saw they were green and ugly so I went back to bed. I guess I'm lucky I'm still here and have power.

I love the little news blurb about the pig and the goat. Funny.

It's always a good day when I see pics of the golden girls. Loved the "bookends" shot.

Great post, Carolyn. We too have two FREE local newspapers which come out each week. There's never much in them --other than funeral notices!!! ha

I look forward to your Golden Girl post every Friday... All I can say is: "What gorgeous dogs"!!!

Have a great Father's Day weekend yourself.
Hugs,
Betsy

Well, you can ship a touch of that hot weather up to PA--we have record cool temps. On second thought, keep it. I don't like muggy summers.
As usual, the girls brighten my day--even just seeing pics.
Thanks.
And for good measure--my word verification: ate ram (ok, so I put the space in to emphasize the goat connection.)

Wooo! You mean the Mountaineer, at 3 times a week is the bigger paper? Wow! But loved the story.

And, of course, we love the Golden Pictures.

You can never know what will appear in a small town newspaper. That's just one of the charms of living in a small town.
We've had plenty of heat but little rain this week.

Beautiful....watching raindrops, so very cute.....

My father is a dear.....I shall spoil him on Sunday, he has done so much for me through my life, I will be eternally grateful....

Summer seems to be passing so quickly....or am I getting older, and think everything passes quickly....the latter, I think

Happy summertime. "It's summertime and the living is easy...". When it gets warm enough to go outside in shorts here at high altitude, that lyric always goes through my head.

I love the bookends photo. Your girls glow with health and happiness.

I hope that your heat and storm cycle breaks!

Hey, Carolyn.......had to STOP for a few and come get my Friday Fix.
I have been so busy all week! We hit 100 yesterday, have not had rain since June 4th.It's been hot, hot, hot so that means lots of watering to keep everything alive.
I wish I could have watched it rain with the GG's!

omg - that thing in the local paper was just too funny! Glad I made it here for Friday! The gals are so lovely... either bored with the storm or studying the rain. They do indeed look just like golden bookends. We're supposed to hit 98 tomorrow (so oppressive.) Hope you all cool off some soon. Father's Day... so thankful we get to celebrate another one with such a special father - wonderful father. And hopefully many more to come. Have a great weekend!

I wish at times (actually often) that I lived a simplier life in a smaller town. Instead I live a hectic life in a small house at the edge of town.

It is rainy and cool here. I hope the sun shines for the solstice. I love the picture of the two dogs sitting looking opposite directions.

It has been hot here too, and when it's not hot, it's raining. We understand Ellie and Lucy's plight.. we haven't been able to do much fun stuff outside, either.

Have a lovely weekend :)

Yes, it's definitely summer...that hot and humid feeling...I could tolerate the heat more without the humidity, but then that just would not be summer, would it!!?

Thanks for commenting everyone.

Betsy - We no longer have the freebie newspaper from Hendersonville. We have to pay for the "Transylvania Times."

Donna - I've heard about the NE weather. It seems to be doing a number on the golf tournament.

Thundering - I had no idea your paper came out THREE times a week!

Golden Sam - I have tried and tried to read your blog and my browser kicks me off saying its infected. I hope the kinks are worked out whether on my end or yours. I miss you.

Cheryl - Of course you are not getting older...time REALLY is passing more quickly.

KB - The song in my head is "Sum-sum-sum-sum-sum-sum-summertime."

Carol - I have heard about your heat and humidity. We are complaining but it's not that bad here.

Robert - We do love our little town, although there are a few downsides.

Tara Dharma - Thanks for dropping by. I do love Robin's blog.

We finally got some rain and it is cloudy this morning.

Ah yes, dogs/puppies really spice up ones life! We took our little munchkin on his longest hike ever yesterday (not very long by our standards) and he got to walk on real forest DEER trails no less ... and climb stumps. Dogs sure know how to enjoy life.
