Nuthatches Sublet to the Titmice

Several weeks ago, a pair of Nuthatches spent an entire day cleaning out one of our nesting boxes. (http://ncmountainwoman.blogspot.com/2009/03/nuthatches-and-nesting-box.html)

We were not at all surprised that they decided not to nest in the box despite the hard work. After all, we have lots of trees with great cavities for nesting and this nesting box is relatively near the house. It is most often used by chickadees.

The other day I saw a gray bird entering the house. On a limb above it sat a Tufted Titmouse. Interesting.

As I kept observing, another titmouse (I'm assuming a female since they do most of the housework) flew into and out of the house.

On occasion, she removed something she had brought in. Perhaps not the right design for her decor.
She worked most of the day.
I hope the titmice will decide to use the nesting box. They are such fun little birds and I love hearing their loud calls in the trees. What volume for such a small bird.

Titmice are among my favorite birds. You are right--such big voices for such little birds.
It would be fun if they nested there.
The only nest I have ever seen nearby our house is the mourning dove nest (written about this morning). We have titmice, but I have no clue where they nest.
By the way, I giggled at your post title.

What fun! We are at the far far end of the titmice range here. Still I see them occasionally at my platform feeder. I wish I would find a nest someday.

You would be very fortunate to have the titmouse nesting. We have a lot of tufted mouse birds but I don't know here they nest.

We certainly enjoy the titmice that come to our feeders. I hope your couple will stay at the box so you can get many pictures in the weeks ahead.

They are such cute little birds. I'm not familiar with their voice, I've had them here at my feeders but not regularly. I'll have to check that out. keep us posted on the "family"

So sweet!!! You are so lucky to have them nesting in your yard. I hope they stay there too as I would love to see more pictures.

It would be great if they really did take up residence there for the season. What a wonderful opportunity to watch their sweet nesting behaviors.

I love the Tufted Titmice also, Carolyn... They are such cute and noisy little guys.. I know you would love having them nest in your special little nestbox. We have two nest boxes in our yard--and so far, nothing has taken up residence in either one. Last year the Bluebirds nested there--but so far, they haven't so far this year.

Have a wonderful day.
Hugs,
Betsy

Great photos! I started photographing the birds at my bird feeder yesterday for the first time. Of course I don't know most of their names so I'll have to get a book to identify them all. It's been great fun though.

Lovely little bird. I will have fun watching them through your post (o: The cross and mountain picture was beautiful. One of our popular places for sunrise services is Red Rocks amphitheater . It is above Denver in the mountains. It heard it was cold and rainy...but beautiful we stayed down here where it was a little warmer.

I've never had nesting Titmice. How lucky you are! Hope she finds the house to her liking and that you have little ones. THAT I'd love to see!

I'm getting springtime-envy here in high in the mountains of Colorado. Our birds have barely started pairing up and haven't looked at our nestboxes yet - except a pair of bluebirds who I've seen working on a nest box in a nearby meadow.

Keep us posted. Those of us in arctic climates can be reminded that spring will get here someday!

First visit here. What a beautiful area of NC you've retired to. I'm from eastern NC but had the pleasure of living in the Banner Elk area (many moons ago) and a best friend lived in Brevard. (great memories!)

What a cute little nesting house! I hope the Titmouse will continue their hard work. I love that little vocal bird. I watched Chickadees one morning and noticed they were only taking material OUT of a new Bluebird box we had put up. "No no no this Bluebird stuff won't do...we have to start all over with our stuff." (Happy to report the Bluebirds are nesting in at least two boxes and the Chickadees are happy too :)

I scrolled down the page here. Beautiful pictures! I've never seen the Red Crossbills here. The mountains are so lovely.

Love your Golden Retrievers, too!
And how about those Heels! "I'm a Tarheel born, I'm a Tarheel bred, and when I die I'll be a Tarheel dead". (VERY enthusiastic Heel fans live here :) My dad who's 86 would still be in a bad mood if they had not won - he STILL sings that song at the end of a game!

Nice meeting you. Looking forward to seeing more of your blog.

I keep driving down to Lake Ontario in hopes of finding one Titmouse. They are found occasionally in the Niagara region of Ontario and I have yet to see or hear one. Such a sweet little bird.
