LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays Are Golden

Autumn is definitely in the air around here.  A few of the leaves are turning and some are already falling.  The mornings are crisp and the days are mild and sunny.  What a welcome respite from our rainy summer.

There is a very old cemetery not far from us.  It is a country community cemetery not associated with a church.  There are still occasional burials there but that is rare.  The cemetery is well off the highway and surrounded by large areas of open grass and trees.  The girls love to go there and run off lead.

I know that some people think it is disrespectful to allow dogs to run free in a cemetery and we never do if there are other people around.  As for me...I can think of no better way to share my final resting place than with happy joyful dogs.  Especially since we are very sensitive about where they go.  (And always have a supply of poop bags with us to carry away anything they might leave.)

Ellie leads the way with Lucy's ears straight up.

A gravel driveway goes around the cemetery.

Lucy finally runs out of steam.

Do you think they are happy there?

Today's quote is a poem by Helen Hunt Jackson.  She was a 19th century American poet and writer.  She was appalled at the government's treatment of Native Americans and was an activist on their behalf.  Read about her if you are not familiar with her life.  She was quite a woman.

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather
And Autumn's best of cheer.

We are definitely having the best of weather and there is a remarkable cheer among folks here in the mountains.  We are between tourist seasons so the town is our own once more.

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE WEEKEND, EVERYONE!!!  BE OF GOOD CHEER.

Impossible to look at those photos--especially the last one--without grinning.

A Facebook friend of mine who lives in DC was talking about Congressional Cemetery, where recently goats were brought in to clean things up a bit. The point was that, with the goats there, owners had to keep their dogs away. While she loved seeing the goats, it saddened her that the dogs could not run and play. Both of us agreed that we would be very happy with dogs running and playing over our graves :-)

As long as they aren't digging for bones, I see no disrespect whatsoever. Most anyone with a heart have known the love of a pet and I don't imagine dying changes that.

The girls look wonderful!!! I'm ready for some of that cooler weather myself. It might not make me as frisky as they are, but it sure won't hurt.

The girls really enjoyed their romp. They are so silly. I would love to give them hugs. Every time I see them it makes me want to have my own Golden. They are such a fantastic breed. Of course I want nearly every dog I see.

They look like they had a right blast. Dogs sure do know how to enjoy the moment.
There are dog people and there are NOT dog people. Sigh. When someone roughs up (in a nice way) Mingus I will ask if they have a dog and sure enough ... they are the people that know what a dog likes.

I would gladly love to have dogs running over me happily for my final days!
Love that quote; what a great person she was.
We are still having daily rains and storms. We've had major rain daily....and tonight we had 3500 lightning strikes within 15 minutes. Yikes!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend...I know you will.

such great photos of the girls! What a happy romp they've had! I, too, would be happy to have dogs playing over my remains.

Sigh...I wish we had signs of autumn. Not so. Still very hot, with hotter temps this weekend. I'd cry, but I can't spare the water.

I remember fondly my last autumn spent in your neck of the woods. Halloween in Mount Airy was extra special.

If I were one of those under the grass, the dogs romping merrily would be a delight.

I couldn't agree with you more. In a place that is full of such sadness, I think having unbridled joy there is welcome, and I wouldn't be upset at all--Who knows, your beautiful girls may even leave some of 'happy spirits' behind! :-)

If I believed in such things I would think that the souls in the cemetary would love to have your girls frolicking amongst them !

The girls look like they have fun wherever they go. They are adorable. And I agree with Ginnie about the souls in the cemetary love a visit from the girls.

Hope you are having a lovely weekend.

Your dogs are so beautiful, and yes, they look like they really enjoyed their run around all those graves. Good to be a dog!
