LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays Are Golden

And so we have entered a new month of 2013.  Like most of the rest of the country, we had very strange January weather which included everything except tropical storm effects.  We've had rain, (lots of rain, TONS of rain), tornadoes, thunderstorms, hail, sleet, snow, and some extremely high winds.  We had 65-degree January days and 22-degree highs.  Most of our weather reports begin with an explanation of why they got it all wrong.  Best to simply keep the pantry and freezer full and see what each morning brings.

Most of the photographs you've seen of our dogs lying in one bed have Lucy using Ellie as a pillow.  Or Lucy taking the center of the bed with Ellie slid halfway under the chair.

The usual with Lucy taking advantage of Ellie's soft body.

Here is a very RARE picture of Ellie actually resting on Lucy.

We have enjoyed the occasional day of sunshine, including today which is sunny and crisp with blue skies and little wind.  And on those sunny days we have appreciated the lengthening hours of daylight.  But mostly we had rain.  Our rivers are full and there was a lot of flooding earlier in the week.

So the quote for today is of time and rivers.  From Roman Emperor and one of my favorite philosophers, Marcus Aurelius:

Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away.

Here is an example of the increased water in our rivers:

Looking Glass Falls in high water

The same waterfall in summer with its normal flow

Wherever you are and whatever your weather, I hope you stay safe and sound.  Keep in mind how fast time goes by and don't miss the things brought into sight.  And do something to help those less fortunate.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND, EVERYONE!!!

I love pictures of the girls, especially the ones where they are curled up together. I want to pile on!

I'll bet your trails are muddy and slippery - have you had to cut back on walking?

Great quote - so true - time marches on. Have a lovely weekend.

Beautiful quote, and gorgeous girls. The weather has been so crazy. It will be 50° here this weekend, and we are at a small fraction of our normal snowpack. For us, the drought is very scary - in terms of fires next summer.

I think that climate change has got to be at the top of the international agenda. However, I fear that we might have already entered the "runaway" phase of temperature increases that the scientists have warned of.

Enjoy your weekend!

Your ending thoughts are always SO thoughtful....meaningful.
Those girls bring a smile to my face every time I see them. Thank you for that.
Stay warm!!

Love the waterfall -- our abundant rain provided us with a few unexpected ones.

Beautiful waterfall photos! Love seeing the golden girls curled up together. Yes, crazy weather here too, but the reliably lengthening daylight is wonderfully reassuring.

We've had some wild weather here, too, with subzero weather one day and 60 degrees the next. There was a blizzard last Sunday that dropped 6 inches of snow in 3 hours, then quickly turned to slop because of the torrential rains that followed.

Two days later, there was a 30 car pileup on a main Detroit freeway that put the preciousness of life into perspective when it took the lives of two young Canadian children and a 54 year old local man. The man's car was so badly smashed between two semi trucks, the police could not identify the brand of the vehicle.

I'm hoping for an early spring myself. This winter has been hard.

It's been that odd here too my friend. Seventy degrees one day, 35 the next. Today, frozen precip falling on my already 8" high daffodils that started coming up in December.

One of these days I hope to get to see Looking Glass Falls... I live in the same State, for heaven's sake !
Your "girls" are always so content with each other ... it's a pleasure to see.

Your girls are looking very lazy and peaceful ... my Mingus too is stretched out in his favourite chair (that has a sheepskin on it!). I'm catching up on my blog reading. It doesn't take long to get behind.

Hope you are having a lazy, peaceful weekend as well. I'm cozied up inside this Sunday afternoon watching the snow come down ... yes for a couple of hours already. Hopefully it won't amount to much.

The waterfall pictures were comforting. My sister and her husband retired to the Brevard area - Pisgah Forest and College Walk - in the late 1980s. She is buried there and her husband's funeral is Tuesday at Moore's.

I like seeing the difference with the waterfalls. More rain is coming, our lake has been up and down a good bit. Think spring is coming soon this year.
