LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays are Golden

It was a sunny, windy and brisk day.  Perfect weather for Golden Retrievers to run free, so off to the lake we went.  Our community has four lakes so we always have new adventures.  The dogs run and run, smiling all the while.

The wind is blowing Lucy's hair and she loves it.  Ellie prefers to have the wind in her face.

Even the hair on Ellie's ears is blowing in the wind.

Lucy abruptly heads down to the water.  She knows she is not allowed to jump in so she puts her paws as close to the water's edge as she dares.  What has caught her attention?

Canada Geese!  Every time one of them honks, Lucy becomes stiff as a board, raising her tail higher each time.  You can see the ripples on this usually calm lake.  It was that windy.

So what do they do afterwards?  Once again Lucy uses Ellie for a pillow.  She gazes out as if recalling the fun day at the lake.  Or perhaps she is admiring her reflection in the glass.

"The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" brought the signing of the Armistice that marked the end of World War I in 1918.

So today (which is the eleventh year as well), we honor our veterans of all wars.  No matter what you believe or how you feel about the wars we are fighting today, you must honor the ones both living and dead who have fought in our armed forces.

In case you are wondering:  there are fifty days remaining in 2011.  If that doesn't motivate you I don't know what will.

HAVE A MOST WONDERFUL WEEKEND, EVERYONE!

Missing our geese...now I know where the traitors went. They left us here to get through winter alone.

It's been really windy here, too, but I just watched video of that hurricane force snowstorm in Alaska this week and feel rather foolish for complaining about our blustery couple of days.

Enjoyed your photos. Hard to believe there are only 50 days left in the year. Seems like it was January just a couple of months ago.

Only 50 days....I'm in trouble! BTW, our turkeys are still in large flocks. Son counted at least 27 the other day!

"Yes and how many times must the Canada geese honk
Before Lucy gets bored with them...
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind...the answer is blowin' in the wind."

I love the veterans, though I loath war. They wear the uniform I chose not to wear, and I do not take for granted that I had that freedom of choice at least in part because of their willingness to serve. Peace to you this Veterans Day, and have a great weekend!

Looks like a great day at the lake. I love how well trained your girls are.

I'm also a hate-war love-soldiers kind of a person :)

Hi there, Loved seeing your girls outside in the wind and sun; can't believe they didn't jump in the water after the geese. I always love seeing them cuddling.
Have a great weekend.

I don't know where this year has gone, this time next year, I'm sure I'll be saying the same thing.

You've taken beautiful shots, and I can see how nice the weather is where you are--Actually, it's nice where I am in Tennessee too. I've thought of you as we are only about 60 miles from Asheville. We're thinking of visiting there on Saturday.

Enjoy your weekend!!!

But wait!! I am confused, bewildered, and perplexed.

Not allowed to get in the water.

I don't understand, I mean, they are goldens and that was water and well, it just doesn't compute.

No swimming....please tell me why, I mean, I just dont get it. I am getting scared.

Sincerely
Bert

I can't believe it is NOvember, my brain refuses to accept it. I'm still stuck in the beginning of October!

Love your stories of those beautiful babies.

What a fun day for the girls. I love how they "use" eachother for comfort.

Golden girls know how to have fun.
Looks like someone saw a familar face in the lake. MOL
The picture of Ellie and Lucy at rest is absolutely precious. Nothing like a good friend!!
We've had a beautiful fall here in Raleigh...but the last few days of wind have about left the trees bare.
Hugs Madi and Mom

The girls look so happy to be running in the wind! I'm impressed that Lucy uses such restraint and won't go into the water. Their coats look wonderful, as usual. I just love your header, Caroline! It's a fabulous view of autumn for me as it snows here in CO. I was shocked to realize how few days are left in 2011 - where did the year go?

Girls always look charming with wind-blown hair... the Golden Girls are no exception.

Thanks, everyone for your comments.

Rudee - Generally speaking, our community does not want resident geese. When it appears they want to be year-round residents the geese are herded up and transported.

TSannie - I don't think I have seen quite that many at once, but we do see a lot of them.

Linthead - As always, you phrased it beautifully. My sentiments exactly.

Bert - Oh, I knew that would upset you. We have so much water with lakes and streams all around us. If we allowed them to swim in each one we would have wet dogs everytime we took them out. I know you don't see that as a problem, but cleaning and grooming two wet Goldens is a lot of work.

Barb - From the weather reports it looks as if you got the snow you wanted. Enjoy it.
