Can't Chew This One

We begin another week with more devastating weather and we turn our thoughts to those directly affected.  I do hope none of you are in harm's way and that you and your loved ones are well.

Charlie is my favorite potter and I visit the studio often.  I told him about the raid on the birdbox and he said he would make me a pottery birdhouse.  So we have hung the new house.  I'm not sure how well it will attract birds, but it makes a lovely addition to the branches of the oak tree.  The hole cannot be enlarged so the flying squirrels and large birds won't have access.

Its brown color fits right in.

It has a lip above the opening to keep out the rain.

Most of our bird boxes are built to be functional, but we do have a few that are purely decorative.  We have very plain gourds scattered in trees throughout the woods.  It's always fun to see which birds will be attracted to which of the houses.  I don't really care if no one choose my new pottery one.  It pleases me enough to look at it.  Serving as a home for birds would be an added bonus.

I really like your pottery house, girl! Our main problem this year with MM's new birdhouses is those dratted English sparrows. I've had to close up two. For two others, Tree Swallows chose one (that's OK) and we did get a bluebird couple to rent another. One I am not sure of as yet. Have tried to sneak up on it to find out what made the obvious wood scrapings at the hole, but haven't managed to catch sight of anything going in or coming out as yet. Love the idea of the potter house, though! Very special!

Oh my, that is just so beautiful and a perfect addition to the oak tree. It blends in so well.

I agree with you it does not matter if the birds do not use it. It would be a bonus but not necessary. A lovely piece of artwork....

I do so hope that your weather improves. I have seen images on BBC TV, and was horrified to hear that many have lost their lives due to the adverse weather conditions. I pray that things soon improve.

I love the new house....if I were a bird, that would be my new pad!
The recent weather has caused so much devastation and pain; heartbreaking.

that is a beautiful bird house! So clever, and with a lip for the rain. I hope the birds find it a suitable home -- it looks so great hanging there.

Oh, I LIKE that! It's the next best thing to a brick house. :) A house with an awning!

Is there a way to empty it?

Wow, that's quite the upscale condo at The Oaks! It's just gorgeous! I love pottery! Is there an opening in the bottom to perhaps clean it out or does the nesting material stay in there - that is should you get tenants who can afford the rent?

Praying for those who are affected by all the devastating effects of the weather - floods, fires, tornadoes and more.

What a clever idea. I've got several bird houses with the chewed entrances wide enough to admit flying elephants.
And thanks for the concern Carolyn. We're all ok although several neighbors lost barns and other outbuildings. Nobody hurt though

I think that your birdhouse is very pretty, and I'll be interested to hear if the birds use it. We've had a marauding squirrel who has invaded *all* 8 of our bird houses. We have metal guards around the entrance holes so the squirrels chewed holes at the edges of the boxes, creating holes that they fit through. Now, I've covered all edges with sheet metal which is holding so far but is *not* pretty!

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Elora - Oh those dreaded sparrows! Glad you got at least one bluebird nesting.

Cheryl - Thanks for the good wishes.

Sally Henny Penny - Yes, there is an opening to drain water and to clean out the old nest.

I love that pottery birdhouse. I hope someone moves right in. It's quite beautiful. I had the same thought as Karin about an opening for cleaning it out.

NCmountainwoman -- I do like your pottery birdhouse. i had one similar to it many, many years ago. Never had a bird take up residence but its earthiness blended nicely with the trees. -- barbara
