LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Dog in the Snow

We had some light snow and lots of ice last week.  We are delighted that our temperatures are back to near normal and the sun is shining.  35 degrees is a lot better than 3.5.

I have mentioned that our Lucy does not like the snow.  She does not want to run or romp in it.  And many winters we have only a couple of measurable snow storms.  Perhaps she does not like having her paws get so cold.  Perhaps she is fearful of sliding.  For whatever reason, Lucy is reluctant to walk around when there is snow on the ground.  This is pretty much how she looks the entire time when we take her out in the snow:

Can we go back inside now?

Lucy spent her first year in Wisconsin with tons of snow.  And she loved it!  She and Ellie would run and run around the yard.  Golden zoomies until they were exhausted.  They would lie down and roll in the snow and dig in the snow with their noses.

Although Lucy is not such an old dog, she certainly acts like one when we have a skiff of snow.  And I'm with her.  I don't care for it at all.  Been there, done that.

I wonder if it's a too painful memory of Ellie, especially since she loved it at one time when romping with her.

I think maybe we all just get too old for snow!

Yeah, snow and winter are losing their allure up in Ohio...and we haven't had near as much snow as we could have. But February has been so cold! The thermometer was hovering around zero F when I left for school this morning...tonight it will be well into the negatives. The Little Miami is mostly frozen over, the Scioto is mostly frozen over, and on and on. And every time I check the 10 day forecast, I whimper.

The older I get, the less I like the cold. Glad snow is a rare thing around here.

Bless her heart, I know I don't take the cold like I used to. Callie loves it if the sun is out and tears around like a maniac. Exact same temp but no sun and she hurries to get her business done so she can come back inside.

I was never much of a snow-bunny even as a child & that has NOT improved with age. I have put my bare feet in the snow a time or two this yeat - but that's hot flash related :)

Our Lily has exactly the same attitude. Having been abandoned and rescued and now allowed to be our first "house dog" I think she knows she's got a good deal now...:)

Our dog doesn't like it either. I saw a suggestion recently about covering a space with a tarp when it snowed, then removing it to reveal Potty Central for prissy pooches. I'm glad I didn't bother--we got only about an inch of our projected 10 inches and it's melting fast.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. Lucy has now decided that the snow is more fun than she thought.

Mary Lee - They actually sell little "potty houses" for dogs. Some of our WI friends had them.
