Checking It Out

Every year the White-breasted Nuthatches check out this nesting box.  So far they have never chosen to nest here but they often go inside.  The usual residents are either chickadees or titmice.  One year flying squirrels used it.  And to think...we bought it because we liked the way it looked.

Nice view

The hole is a bit too large for my liking

The birds may decide not to use this box because the flying squirrels enlarged the hole.  The smaller birds may feel vulnerable there.

I'm taking a blogging break for a week or so.  Company coming.  And the ACC Tournament.
Take care

Beautiful nuthatch! They are so cute to watch walking down trees, headfirst. I see them on campus more than I do here...lots of places to nest up there.

Hi there, The only place I've ever had birds nest was on the wreath on our front porch. It was quite messy and we had to repaint the wood where their poop landed. I think a birdhouse that was used would be fun-most of mine are just for decoration. Have fun while you are absent here-sending warm hugs to you.

Love the look of the birdhouse, too. What a variety of creatures have inhabited it! NC woods are fantastic places, aren't they? Have fun with your friends!

White breasted nuthatches are beautiful and fun to watch. We have a bird nest box on a tree, and they go in and pull out the nesting material to bring elsewhere!

Beautiful birdhouse, and a stunning little chickadee. Ah, the season is upon us, and all the bird songs fill the air.

Enjoy your break and your company.

Go, Heels!

Interesting what works and doesn't work in various birdhouses. My favorite was the screech owl who moved in our wood duck house.

We have never had good luck with birdhouses attracting any visitors, so hope yours finds a new occupant this year.
Have a wonderful visit and break.

You must have been galled when the squirrels used it! :)

We have those same nuthatches and they never use boxes... I think maybe they're more private about their nest sites.

We have guests too so we are DVRing the tournament. Weird year, with the changes in the ACC.

Such sweet little birds! Oh, and I had to laugh because I thought you were calling it Nutella instead of Nuthatch :)
