LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays Are Golden

We try not to say the word "squirrel" around here.  We use several words instead.  If we DO say the word, both girls run to the door so they can go out on the deck and chase away the squirrel.  The squirrel moves on as soon as the door opens but that doesn't stop the girls.

Lucy stares at the squirrel who has jumped into the trees.

Ellie was a bit slow and missed the whole thing.

I asked for a pose and she obliged.
Er...Mom...the sun is a bit bright and you forgot my shades.

Lucy stands in triumph, confident that she alone has rid us of the little pest.

We have a couple of brush piles deep in the woods.  They are great for little animals and birds during the winter.  Last week my husband did a bit of pruning and took the branches to a brush pile.  Dang!  Wouldn't you know that an industrial squirrel promptly used them for a new nest?  No good deed will go unpunished I suppose.

Dratted squirrel.  I see the fresh green branches.  We didn't intend to update your condo.

Once again our weather has had its ups and downs this week.  Our local newspaper announced that March came in like a lamb...covering everything with its fluffy white fleece.  And we are expecting near-record highs over the weekend.  You figure.  And hard as it is to believe we switch to Daylight Saving Time this weekend.    I don't like it.  I don't like it.  I don't like it.

This week's quote is from the Dalai Lama:

"Compassion is not religious business, it is human business.  It is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability.  It is essential for human survival."

Let us all hope we can find more compassion for the plants, animals, and people who share this planet with us.

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE WEEKEND, EVERYONE!!!

I have exactly the same problem with my 7 year old puppy. He has an obvious vocabulary of about a dozen words that we now in some cases have to SPELL. Just like when our sone were little. Squirrels is one of them. Ice Cream is another....:)

I think we may need a dog to finally chase away all the squirrels. They LOVE the birdseed I scatter on the ground, and often get to it before the doves and juncos.

Wonderful quote. And I totally agree about daylight savings time. I am a morning person, and taking away that hour and sticking it on the end of the day doesn't suit me at all!

Your girls are so adorable! We just got back from warm sunny AZ. and I am not prepared for the blizzard warning we heard today for this weekend.
The girls certainly do a wonderful job.
Have a great weekend.

I am NOT a morning person so I love the extra daylight when I get home from work. But I will admit that the older I get the harder it is to adjust...

Isn't it funny how a certain word will get the dogs going? With my daughter's dogs it's the word "carrot" ... they consider it a real treat and bounce around until they get a bite of one !

Oh, the squirrels. We have our share--and they cavort just outside the glass doors of our sun porch. The dog goes NUTS. The squirrels know they are safe--they simply stick out their little tongues, doing squirrel raspberries at the dog.

We can't use the S word here, either. Leo has made it his life's main challenge to catch one. He's come awfully close at times.

We've been warming up here, but I can still see dirty snow where it was piled high from last week's storm. I'm ready for some greenery, even if that means more squirrels.

My wife can't use the S word around her husband...he jumps up, grabs the camera, and runs to the door ;-) Our snow has melted, though we surely got covered in the most beautiful white fleece, and we have lots of robins these days. A few doves are milling about, too. Everywhere the song of spring is being sung. May it be a season of new hope. Your girls are so beautiful...I dearly love seeing them!

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

I wonder who the girls learned their squirrel chasing behavior from? Could it be the squirrel-hater in the family? :)

Around here, the forest service makes slash piles in the summer, and then they burn them in the winter when there's snow on the ground. I hate it because I visualize all the small animals using the piles as their homes being incinerated.

It sounds like you are having a Colorado March!

So funny you can't say the 'word' around your girls. They are too smart and so silly too! I know the squirrels are a pain, but how smart are they? So creative with their condo's!!!
I hope your weekend was wonderful. I'm not a fan of time changes either...it seems every little thing messed up my 'clock' these days.

Squirrels are really aggravating. We can't say the word either. The Aussie tries to herd the other one, keeping him from the squirrel. Goofy dog.
