LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Color in the Community

Some call them "leaf peepers" and some call them "leaf lookers."  Lookers or peepers,  tourists fill our mountains this time of year to see the Autumn color.  It's great for our little town which relies heavily on tourism.  It's not always so great for those of us who live here year round.

We are blessed to live in our own quiet community, away from the busy highways.  While we travel through the mountains during the week, we don't often leave our community on weekends.  And we find plenty of color right here.  Plenty of breath-taking distant mountain views a short distance from our house.

The following photographs were taken right in our community, away from the crowded highways.  The colors are very nice right now.  Next week will bring the peak of the color to our area.  It's true...life really is better in the mountains.

Now, if we can get the rain and wind to hold off for a week or two...

WE missed our trip this year because my mom had surger a few weeks ago, but this is the time we usually come your way. It is true, the show of leaves is magnificent and the small town lifestyle is so inviting.

Have a wonderful fall and take a lot of pictures.

Seems as though the hickories turned yellow overnight. I also noticed the Ginkgo biloba are their showing their bright yellows.
Beautiful photos. Your mountains are gorgeous.

Indeed the color is beautiful. We try to time our visits west in the non touristy shoulder season...

Leaf "peeping" fascinates me. I've indulged in it myself, though I'm more of a Catawba Rhododendron junkie, as far as the NC mountains are concerned. We lived for years in the Raleigh area, where autumns were spectacular! We grew up in the Hickory area, where autumns were spectacular! We lived for five years in the mountains, where autumns were spectacular! And now we live in central Ohio, where autumns are spectacular! Sense a theme? I cannot imagine a prettier town than Yellow Springs, Ohio, right now. I miss the mountains and the vistas, yes, but so much beauty is all around us. I think sometimes we need to stop seeking and just open our eyes and look around. Love you, friend!

Hi, I would be one of those peepers if I lived closer-of course I'd probably come by for a visit too. We were up in the mountains for a couple of days and saw some color but I sure miss the colors from the East.
Have a great evening.
Hugs, Noreen

Have to admit to being a leaf-peeper, although the planned trip over the Cherohala Skyway hasn't come together. Too many distractions. I love your mountains, but I have to admit our plateau is quieter. It's still relatively undiscovered.

Wow. I love the reds mixed in with the other colors. I'm hoping that the wind holds off for you. We had gusts up to 75 mph over the past day so our leaves are almost gone.

I agree - the mountains are the best place to live!

Gorgeous! One of the security guards who worked in my building recently retired to Clyde - about 5 miles from where we used to live in Waynesville. I think he saw me turning green while we were talking about it...

I was just looking at my BRP pictures from 2010. Beautiful color and memories. This year our leaves were stunningly beautiful, a surprise because we had a dry year

Rain and wind here last night and it brought down the first horde of autumn leaves. Autumn does not stay long enough. Like you, my views are right here on my property. -- barbara

You truly live in Paradise. I may have told you that when my husband first came to N Carolina in the late 70's he fell in love with your area ... unfortunately he couldn't find work there so here we are in the Sandhills ... nowhere near as scenic !

I was lucky enough to be (literally) in your neck of the woods last year in October. The colors were/are indeed spectacular.

I've lived in several tourist destination towns, and the visitors really can be annoying despite their benefit to the local economy. A curse and a blessing.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. We do feel fortunate.

Linthead - You make a good point. If you look around you will find beauty everywhere.

Madi - sorry you missed the leaves but glad everyone is getting back to health.

Bug - It is a small world, isn't it?

Ginnie - I love the mountains but I always enjoy visiting the sandhills as well. We have such a beautiful state.

Andrea - Thanks for dropping by.

Tara - Yes, we love them and we hate them all at once.
