LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays are Golden

We spend many summer hours sitting on the screened porch. Safe from the insects, we are still in touch with nature, listening to the sounds and seeing the sights of the seasons. We are at eye level with some of the bird boxes and watch the residents coming and going. It's a great place to read, especially when it's raining.

We always felt a little guilty that the dogs had to lie on the hard planks. But the rain sometimes blows onto the porch so standard dog beds didn't seem practical. After some research we ordered a couple of canvas beds for the dogs. Placed near the edge, they would offer the dogs the opportunity to catch any breezes and to look down on the woods that make up our back yard.

The dogs are quite interested when we are on the porch. They do not like to be left inside.

With any new thing, the sniff test is always first.

Lucy decides that she doesn't like the new beds and doesn't understand what they are for, and has no desire to be near them. She walks away, disgusted with this surprise much like a child who gets pajamas for Christmas.

Ellie sits on one of the beds and decides she likes the feel of it.

Following Ellie's example, Lucy tries the other bed.

Lucy falls asleep. She still doesn't care all that much for the new bed. I think it's because she can't share the bed with Ellie.

As we enter this weekend, please give thought to the devastation of the Gulf oil spill. Devastation that we brought upon ourselves because of our steadfast refusal to conserve and sacrifice a little more. So this weekend (if not forever) carefully look at your own energy consumption. Look at ways to reduce your own carbon footprint.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.

Dogs can be like children, can't they? haha Your girls are so cute and have such personalities!

You're right - everyone needs to stop and think if they can do just a little more to use less.

Have a wonderful weekend.

We've been looking for a bed like those for our dog Gidget. She's an old gal and when we drive up to Hasty Brook she winds up lying on the bare ground. She doesn't mind but the damp leaves her very stiff. Would you mind sharing where you bought them?

(they look a bit like little pool tables!)

I had this type of outdoor bed for my Golden, Breezy - she loved it. It allows air to circulate - nice when it gets hot outside. Now my Grand Dog uses it.

The beds look like just the thing for summer!

I've wondered how dogs would like those kind of beds! Like someone else said, a great idea for summer.

Those beds are perfect...your girls are lucky!
The oil spill...ugh...what are we doing to our planet? It pains me to think of what this is costing us, nd not the $$ aspect either.

I'd really like it if you kept us posted on whether the girls finally do truly like the beds or not. I've eyed them in the catalogs for a long time because I want beds that I can leave deck for the dogs. But, I always hesitated about whether to buy or not. I'm just not sure if the dogs will like them.

I agree about the oil spill and our carbon footprints. I'm very worried about the environmental damage being done.

NC--you are so on target. I have been watching the oil spill news and keep thinking--we all are to blame.
Cut back on our energy consumption NOW, or we will see more spills in the future.

Love the doggie beds.

love the canvas beds! we use these in our kennels at the college and they also are very popular at the humane society...once the dogs get used to them, they love them!
i think you are right on about Lucy not being able to lay with Ellie.....but, i bet in short time she will find a way!!

Lucy and Ellie are such an adorable pair.......the joy they have given me since I have been visiting your blog has been amazing. I always leave here smiling.

I have been watching the news items on the oil spill. It is just so dreadful. The inpact on the environment, I believe, will go on for years. I am very conscious of my global footprint. I don't always get it right but I do my best.

Thank you for raising the issue.....so important.

Those are nice beds. I have never seen anything like them before. Our cities are designed for cars and it has become nearly impossible to rely on them. That oil spill is devastating.

That photo of Lucy with such a disappointed look is so funny! Glad she finally decided to give it a whirl. This oil spill is giving me such a sick feeling in my soul. The thought of all the wildlife at danger and the destruction of so much wetland is beyond sad.

Those are super nice beds - where did you find them?

Sweet, refreshing post at the end of a hard week in America. Simplicity is good: dogs, deck, small challenge, success. If only all of life worked so well. Thanks for the mental vacation!

Thanks for dropping by everyone. The dog beds are from www.petcot.com. Ellie uses one much more often than Lucy but I have a feeling that they will use the beds more when the weather gets hot.

Hi Carolyn! I missed this post and just wanted to add that we used to have these at our last place. Some of the dogs liked them, and others for some reason just couldn't get used to them. The ones that did would lay in them for hours on the deck and snooze the day away!
