LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

At the Birdfeeders

One of the best things about a house in the woods is that the birdfeeders on the deck are near the trees and attract a wide variety of birds. The birds have been especially entertaining this winter with our near-record snowfall and cold temperatures. I have to refill the feeders at least once a day.

A Purple Finch sits patiently waiting for the crowds to clear at the feeders.

A couple of female Purple Finches share the remaining sunflower seeds with a goldfinch.

As the feeder swings in the wind it becomes apparent that there are actually three females with the goldfinch.

Meanwhile, the large male still sits on his perch watching all the action.

The goldfinch appears to be saying something. Perhaps it's about the snow.

The Purple Finch adds his two cents.

A Tufted Titmouse decides to get a bite.

The action has been fast and furious at all of our birdfeeders and at the water. Every morning the birds sit in the trees waiting for me to hang the feeders and pour the fresh water.

I got an email from Newsweek this morning. They want me back and are offering 88% discount if I subscribe. After continually subscribing to Newsweek for many many years, I canceled my subscription a couple of years ago when they hired Karl Rove to write commentaries. When I called to cancel, I listed the reason in two words, "Karl Rove." I may not be able to hit the "mute" quickly enough to avoid him on television, but I wasn't about to pay money for a magazine subscription and get angry every single week. No thanks, Newsweek, I've done quite well without you. But I do wonder how in the world you got my email address...

Wonderful pictures! Purple finches are so beautifully rosy against all the white.

And I love your reason for giving Newsweek the cold shoulder!

Nice to see the gang enjoying their feeder in a snowstorm. I'll bet they are grateful to you for keeping it full!

Love all the action at your birdfeeder. Makes me look forward even more to when we can finally hang ours. I did just hear from some locals who said we'll attract bears if we feed the birds, but that seems okay, doesn't it?

What was Newsweek thinking when they hired that man? I think it's great you canceled your subscription. I almost wish I had a subscription to cancel!

I love those conversations the birds are having...I have a feeling that they may have been chatting and referring to the "D*mn SNOW!!

BIRDS seem to be the theme of the day! I have a nest on mine today, and so does Dawn from May All the Seasons Be Sweet!

I woke up to an orchestra of them this morning. So nice to hear spring trying to rush in...

That's a great reason to cancel! My husband takes the alternative view that it's important to listen to guys like him so that we know the tactics being used by the far right... I say "Fine, but wait until I'm NOT in the room!".

Love the bird photos!

As usual, your photos and bird commentary are entertaining.

I agree about KR. Can't even say his name. He is a devious political tactician.

Did you take those pictures this week? Is that (gulp!) more snow??? I'm sure the birds have been "tweeting" out the location of the best buffet in town!

With you on Karl Rove or, as Bush called him, Turd Blossom. I don't see the logic of having anyone who is never going to try to see both sides of an issue write commentaries. He and others like Dick Morris are bottom feeders.

Thanks everyone.

Cedar - Based on the food they consume, I'm sure they are grateful.

Robin - We do so enjoy watching our feeders.

Suz - Yep. I think that's exactly what they said.

Caboval - Actually, our dogs also enjoy watching the birds at the feeders. Definitely get one.

KB - I agree in principle that it's best to know what they are saying. That said, I just can't do it.

Marylee - Yes, we got yet another snow. I'm thinking of moving back to WI. Well, maybe not.

I've only seen my Purple Finches two or three times this winter. Love the beautiful coloration on your male!

Those purple finches are beautiful. I've never seen one around here.
I'm enjoying watching the kildeer and bluejays fighting over territory in my pear trees.
