LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

The Beach in the Fall

We're back from our vacation to the Outer Banks. Amazed at the extent of development in the area, we were pleased to find that the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge still provide a welcome respite from the townhouses along the coast.

The weather was chilly, rainy and cloudy all week with little breaks of sunshine. Not the greatest weather for taking photographs.

Our first trip was to the Bodie Lighthouse. The lighthouse is 156 feet tall with a Fresnel 1st Order Lens. A new wildlife viewing area was opened in September so we were able to walk over the marsh surrounding the lighthouse.

This view is from the walkway over the marsh.

I'm terrible at identifying shore birds. Here are few we observed:

A Pelican diving into the sound.

You might ask, "Why on earth would you go to the beach in mid-October?" The answer is quite simple as this photograph indicates.

The people are gone for the most part.

So we have to beach to ourselves and our friends the birds. And the weather is usually better than it was while we were there this time.

I must say, no matter what a vacation is like, it's always nice to be home, hugging the dogs you missed so much and sleeping in your own bed.

When I was growing up, we went to Nags Head for vacation every year. It was deserted - not yet discovered by the rest of the world. I'm glad that there are still places for the wildlife and you had a nice time visiting! Our favorite 'secret' beaches used to be as empty in August as your photo showed in October!

I kind of think the weather may have been perfect--at least your photographs are. They're beautiful.

Welcome home. I'm glad you had a nice trip.

One of the very best vacations our extended family ever took was going to Cape Cod over Thanksgiving one year. The shore was just wonderful. Deserted and beautiful in all its Fall glory. I understand perfectly!

Your second photo of the Bodi is beautiful - first one is as well.

My family did Myrtle Beach one Thanksgiving - it was really nice! My husband & I stayed at Hilton Head (my first & last time) one January - but it was still too busy for me! And only one way on & off the island - I was claustrophobic from all the traffic...

I, like you, prefer getaways where there is no one around. Glad you had a good time.

It looks like you had a wonderful time there. October is the perfect month for seashore vacations.

Ha Carolyn, You and I could have almost written each other's blogs today. I too talked about being home and sleeping in my own bed... ha

Glad you had a wonderful trip. I love lighthouses. Sorry the weather didn't cooperate--but at least you weren't around a ton of people (which we both detest).. Right????

I've never been to the Outer Banks--but one day may get there.

Glad you got home safely. Missed you.
Hugs,
Betsy

We have exactly the same reaction when we get home from a trip. We go to the beach in May for the same reasons you go in October. There's nothing nicer than a beach which you have to yourselves.

Hi NCmountaingirl.....I love the lighthouse photograph.....

The beach looks perfect to me. I could not agree more, the birds are the perfect choice as company.

I understand the 'dogs and bed' thing...

Welcome home, it is good to have you back.....

I have not been to the Outer Banks since I was a kid, so have no idea how developed it must be.

But we do go to the beach all of the time in the winter. It is absolutely the best time to go - because the people are gone AND the dogs can be on the beach. Yep, The Herd goes with us.

Beautiful! So much nicer with the crowds (and the considerable heat) gone!

Your absolutely correct. We love our spring and fall vacations. We were there several years back when I was still teaching. Walked the beaches, checked out the lighthouse etc. It was July and a zoo!

Beautiful photos! I like beaches best when they are deserted except for the birds.

I especially love the photo of the white bird above the diving pelican. The beach looks lovely and peaceful, too.

It is always fun to go, but like you, I am always so glad to be home too. Sorry the weather didn't co-operate a bit more, but I am sure it was lovely. Welcome home.

When I was a child, a couple of times we rode down to Hatteras after fall hurricanes to pick up shells. I don't remember any structures other than the lighthouse. Now...YIKES! So many houses!

Hope the pupsters didn't hold a grudge. :)

It might not have been the best for taking pictures, but.....that first light house picture is gorgeous!
And I LOVE pelicans. We visited the Mississippi River a few years ago and I was surprised to see my first pelican. I thought they were only at the ocean. Shows what I know.
