LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays are Golden

We have a new local pet supply store. It is not terribly convenient for us but we needed some doggie toothpaste and decided to stop in and see what they had.

It's a nice store, although it is small, and we will patronize them. A bin of deer antlers was near the checkout counter. We had never purchased antlers and the store clerk assured us that our dogs would love them. We looked at them. They were pricey. But since we don't indulge the dogs all that often, and since it was a new store, and since the girls had been cooped up because of the rain, we decided to give them a try.

The girls had just come inside and we towel-dried them so they are still damp, fluffy, and curly.

We put the antlers on the floor so each dog could choose one.

Lucy takes her antler to one of the beds.
"I'm checking this out. I think I really like it."
That's good, Lucy.

Ellie takes her antler to the other bed.
"I think this is going to be good, but I have to lick it all over first."

"Mom! I look just like a mammoth who lost a tusk!"
Yes, that's exactly what you look like.

There follows a process that repeats itself every time the girls get dried bones or new toys. Lucy abandons hers and goes over to check out the one Ellie has.

"I'm afraid Ellie has the best one. I'm sorry, but I have to take it away from her."
Lucy, that is not true. One of these days you are going to try that and Ellie is going to snap at you.

Lucy takes the antler from Ellie who looks bewildered as always but gives no quarrel or resistance at all.

"I'll just take this one over and give it a try."
Lucy, that is not a nice thing to do.
"Well, I figure anything is all right if you can get away with it."

Poor Ellie is much like Charlie Brown who is always surprised that Lucy once again removed the football. No matter how many times it occurs she can't believe it.
"Dad, did you see that?"
Yes, Ellie. But we've talked about this before. You are the one who has to keep this from happening. We won't get involved and you'll have to work it out.

"Oh, well. I think this one might be better anyway. I do hate to make a fuss."

This is the last weekend of September. We've past the equinox and are heading into fall. The sun has been shining for two days now, but more rain is predicted for this weekend. We have been assured it will be light rain and we hope that is true. While we are safe, with only minor inconveniences from some still-closed roads, we know there are areas in Georgia where the citizens are still without safe drinking water. Our thoughts are with those who are cleaning out the muck and trying to return to their homes.
HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND, EVERYONE. GIVE THANKS FOR WHAT YOU HAVE AND MAKE THE MOST OF THESE MILD DAYS. THEY'LL BE GONE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT.

Very neat NC. And thank you for the words of advice and wisdom the other day...very much appreciated. O' and when the snow melts this spring when my dogs bring home a dozen antlers I'll send a set down to you if you want for the girls...it looked like they loved them. Have a good weekend.

I feel better already having seen the GG's! Jake is our Lucy and does the exact same thing! He still is not back to himself and is grouchy as a hungry bear! I'm a little grouchy myself!

We call it 'dog politics' and always enjoy watching our critters sort things out.

There is always one that is not happy with their own.
And the other always gives in.
Have a great weekend!

Hi Carolyn, Love seeing the little 'situations' between your two girls. Just like people ---different personalities!!!! One of my sons was quite passive. So many times, I wanted to tell him to take up for himself --but I refrained (just like you do).

Too many times parents get too involved --and kids don't learn how to handle situations for themselves.

Another cute post....

Have a great weekend... We're supposed to get rain AGAIN also. Grrrrr.
Hugs,
Betsy

Hmmm never heard of antlers for chewing toys..guess they don't splinter ..as you wouldn't have bought them.
where's there two there will always be one more likely to be aggressive and one more likely to be submissive...give and take.. :)

Poor Ellie! I hope she got her antler back from Lucy.

I had not heard of antlers as chew toys, but it looks as if your girls like them. Your girls remind me of my kids when they were small. Most of the time they got along just fine, and I'm glad your girls do the same.

Sweet photos. I never tire of watching dog behavior. They are so funny and amusing. Your girls' actions reminds me of how my dogs act when they have new stuff too.

I've never seen deer antler chews! Funny how the other gals treat is always better.

Very sweet... I don't guess most dogs would be so willing to share.

Hope your weekend is great!

I didn't know that could have deer antlers either! I'm glad they enjoyed them and that Ellie has such a sweet disposition that she doesn't get upset with her sister :)

Love your words of wisdom!! They remind me of Joey and Kealani. They will start eating their meal and halfway through they exchange bowls with each other. Its so cute! Hugs Valerie

They are so fun to see. It's good they get along so well, even when the "sharage" is not voluntary! We'll get more rain here today too, but hopefully not so much it can't soak into the ground. For the first time in, I can't remember when, we actually have a surplus of rain for the year.

I laughed out loud at the "tusk picture." That's EXACTLY what it looked like. I remember reading about antlers in The Daily Coyote, I think. I didn't know you could buy them. They don't splinter?

Incidentally, the comment you put on my blog was better than my post. I'm pretty sure we're living in a parallel universe.

Ha, ha...I love the pictures and the doggie dialogue. Ellie and Lucy remind me of my children when they were small. Benjamin would always give in to his sister, who always wanted both her treat...and his. As he got older, he started fighting back. And they haven't stopped since. :-) But, like Ellie and Lucy, they really love each other and are the best of pals...most of the time.

I hope your rain is as light today as the rain we're having here. My son is supposed to play at Heritage Day at WCU, and he's been dreading the thought of getting his guitar wet!

Yours handle the "trades" with grace, at least. Queen Natasha the Evil would gather everyone's in a big pile and defend them, totally unacceptable behavior. Thus the crates for treats in our world.

Thanks for commenting, everyone.

SuperMama - Thanks. I don't know if the antlers have to be treated or not. Must be interesting to have the dogs bring those racks home.

Carol - Surely you can't blame Jake for being a bit grouchy. Hope both of you are feeling better.

Vicki - The politics does get interesting. Surprising to most people, Ellie is actually the alpha; she just selects her battles.

Twisted - Yep...and it's always Lucy who is looking for something better.

Betsy - We got two and a half inches of rain Friday night and Saturday. Rivers came back up but no flooding this time.

Tina - No they don't splinter at all. I was surprised that they girls enjoy them so much.

Cicero - We had never seen antler chews before either but we are finding that they are fairly common.

Laura - Ellie has such a mellow temperament. She doesn't like discord at all.

Caboval - Our dogs wolf down their food so quickly there's no time to switch bowls.

Merrily - Can't imagine anything funnier than your posts. I love them. The antlers do not splinter at all. They do "lick" down like a lollipop.

Herd - Sometimes I think it's better to have one "Supreme Queen". Then, perhaps not.

Cathy - I think the new store will do well. There are lots of retirees who treat their little dogs like children. You wouldn't believe the variety of clothing for little dogs.
