LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays Are Golden

The dogs go on alert.  They stare out the door to the deck, standing stiff as boards.

We're on guard duty!

And what has put them on high alert?  A squirrel sunning on the deck as if we had no defense.  Just lying there taking a sunbath.

Dratted squirrel

Of course, the squirrel runs away immediately when I open the door to release the dogs.  Ellie doesn't follow the trail, but Lucy stares down to watch the squirrel in the trees.

See?  I made him leave all right.

She sniffs and sniffs where the squirrel was sunning.

Both girls prance inside, so proud that they got rid of the squirrel.  They immediately go over to the treat canister for a reward.  We try not to say the word, "squirrel."  If we do, the girls run to the door and then wonder why we don't open it for them.

July is passing by so quickly.  There are only 165 days left in the year 2013!  It has been a strange summer here in the mountains.  While we are seeing more and more sunshine, we are having almost daily afternoon/evening thunderstorms.  I don't think we will dry out for a while.

Today's quote comes from satirist and author Russell Baker:

"Ah, summer; what power you have to make us suffer and like it."

I hope your summer is going well and your 2013 goals are half met.

HAVE A SAFE AND WONDERFUL WEEKEND, EVERYONE!  ENJOY THE SUMMER DAYS.

I bet they put on quite a show of prancing. They know they've done a good job. Hope you have a nice weekend too.

We're having a very hot summer. We don't get much humidity here in the Sierra foothills, but it's still sizzling hot. I keep thinking about global climate change and wondering what the future is going to look like in the next decade.

Can't help but chuckle...both in their response to the squirrel and to the quote about summer!

Happy Friday, We too are having more thunderstorms than last year. In fact, we got soaked last weekend camping and had to come home and then yesterday went for a bike ride in the mountains and it started to pour as we left. Rained most of the night. Good for crops and lawns but it is different.
Have a wonderful dry weekend.
Hugs, Noreen

Great job girls. How nice to be feared.
A lot of sunshine is not necessarily a good thing. We have had a beautiful summer, clear skies, coolish temps but are paying now for all that sun with drought conditions. No place seems to be getting a proper mixture.

They are like my dog. The squirrel is very much afraid of our dog but I can go out on the deck and a squirrel will just keep on eating from the bird feeder.

I had to smile at the thought of Golden Guard Dogs :) It's pretty funny that your girls know the word "squirrel" since I know your feelings about those critters.

It sounds as if you're having monsoons like we have in our mountains every summer. We have storms most afternoons.

I just found your blog over the weekend. I was immediately interested because I live across the Cape Fear River just outside of Wilmington, NC. So when I saw someone not only from NC, but from the NW while I am SE, that seemed interesting.

I have to tell you how pleased I am that I found it. Not only because the pictures of the landscape around your home is beautiful, as are your dogs, but because I found others who see the world as I do; others that are appalled at gun rights activists' tactics, the imposition of unnecessary voter "fraud" laws, ridiculous legislation about the level of the ocean waters, etc.

We have wonderful friends, but live in a county where finding views that match ours is extremely difficult. So when I saw that even those who comment on your blog agree with what I see as more compassionate and logical thinking, I was thrilled.

I have read almost all of your posts from 2013, just at different bits of time over the weekend. I was particularly touched by the January 16th post, "Sorry I Can't Make It". The insensitivity of the Tea Party in that area stunned me. How can any of us be that cold towards the death of children? I hope never to be capable of understanding that.

Anyway, it is nice to meet you and I hope to visit again.

Your girls are too funny. They sure do want their treats when they think they have done a "good" thing don't they? Mine is the same way.

We have it dry in our neck of the woods. I was away at the coast to visit me Mither and got home yesterday. Already the woods are quite dry. We need some rain.
