LIFE'S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS

Fridays Are Golden

If you have access to news and weather it comes as no surprise that western North Carolina has seen a deluge this past week.  Here at our house we have measured 11 inches of rain since last Sunday.  Many roads in our county are closed and the French Broad River Basin is out of banks in several places.  In other nearby counties slides have completed closed some highways.  And it's not over yet.  Few people recall this much rain absent a tropical storm.

This is what's in store for us.

The downtown Independence Day festivities went on in the rain although we did not attend.  Rather, we celebrated at home with my favorite food...HOT DOGS!  We never eat hot dogs so it was quite a treat.  And they were fantastic!

July 4th marked Lucy's birthday as well.  She is eight years old although she still thinks of herself as a teenager.  We had two choices when we selected Lucy from the breeder.  She immediately came up and started chewing on my husband's shoe laces while the other puppy moved to a corner of the room.  My husband was hooked forever from that moment.  After we made our choice, the breeder brought out another female from the litter.  They could have been twins both in actions and in looks.  He said he wanted to keep a female from this litter and had not been able to make up his mind between these two dogs, finally deciding only 30 minutes before we arrived.

Baby Lucy loved to crawl over and push this giant ball.

She ran and played until exhausted.

She never did like to have to sit on command.

Ellie shared her tennis balls.

She is a great dog to take hiking and will go and go, smiling all the way.

Lucy brings great laughter and joy to our lives.  She has quite a sense of humor and is very creative at amusing herself.

Our quote for the week comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson who penned the words during the Civil War.  They apply no less to our situation in America today:

"The reason why the world lacks unity and lies broken and in heaps, is, because man is disunited with himself."

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE WEEKEND, EVERYONE!!!

We've had some rain and plenty of gloomy days, but nothing like what you're dealing with lately. I hope the jet stream moves for you soon!

Happy Birthday Miss Lucy!

That is definitely too much rain. My older brother in Virginia calls me nearly everyday to give me his weather report. I hope you all get some much needed sunshine soon. Hey, I have an idea... I'll send you our sun. It's been relentlessly hot here. Crazy times for sure.

Happy birthday to your beautiful Lucy.

Happy Birthday Lucy. Such a beauty you are.
So sorry you are getting soooo much rain. The West is on fire and the East is under water. Not fair.
We are in a wonderful weather bubble right now. Probably won't last but it sure is nice for now.

that is a huge area affected! I hope the rain stops. As Robin said, we've had the opposite here - one week of triple digit heat.

Happy Birthday to Lucy! She's an adorable girl, and her puppy photos are extra special. I know the joy an animal can bring -- you all are lucky.

Hi Carolyn, I am getting back into reading and commenting. You all up river have really gotten a lot of rain. We are about 5- 7 inches depending on when you start the measuring. The flood gates are wide open on the dam. The lake was at 439.75 ft.
Hard to believe your Lucy is 10 already, she looks like a young lady still.

Happy belated to the All American Lucy!!
We were in SC and GA over the last week and were rained on daily; not fun! I hope you are seeing some sunshine soon.

Great quote, and Lucy is a GREAT dog! You know I love your Ellie, but Lucy truly is, as someone said earlier, a joy giver. So glad y'all found each other! I dearly love hot dogs, too...in moderation, of course.

Happy birthday to Lucy! She's so much fun - I like to hear about her antics :)

I like hotdogs too, but since we moved to Ohio I'm enamored of brats. Yum! I think I might have to have one for dinner...
