Just Sittin' and Singin' on the Mailbox Post

I heard him as I drove up the street towards our house.  Not unusual since we are blessed with many Towhee nests along our quiet street.  And they have easy-to-recognize songs.  In fact, there is a towhee nest under one of our holly bushes.  When we walk the dogs in the mornings, we see as many as five Towhees on the berms along the street and hear even more of them in the woods.  As I approached the driveway I saw him sitting on top of our mailbox post just singing his little heart out.  He didn't move even when I pulled into the driveway.

When I came out of the garage he was still sitting there.

As I walked towards him he turned to look right at me.  I was certain he would fly away.

But he simply turned around and resumed his delightful tune.

He knows I'm standing there.

Finally he stopped singing and I knew he wouldn't remain there much longer.

He flew into the nearby trees.  I couldn't see him but he immediately continued singing.  What an unexpected treat!  We often go looking for birds but it is much more thrilling to find a favorite bird when you aren't even looking.  I smiled the rest of the day.
