And Then the Sun Came Out

Despite a day of rain the icicles on the trees remained and continued to grow. The following morning we finally saw the sun. What a beautiful sight after so many gray and dreary wet and snowy days.

I would have liked to do some walking around to see the magic, but the constant cracking of broken tree limbs kept me grounded. These photographs were taken from our deck.

The Tufted Titmouse pauses during feeding.

The Purple Finch sits on an icy branch.

Sunrise actually brought the dawn. We hadn't seen the sun for many days.

Finally...the sky is Carolina blue.

The ice has melted from the trees but the weather has turned unseasonably cold and we have high winds, certain to bring down more trees. It's a bit scary to drive the mountain roads, not knowing if you will encounter fallen trees around the next curve. Here's hoping for better weather across the country. Stay safe and warm.

  1. The birds don't seem to be pausing and resting, they appear to be posing. You get the most spectacular photos of your feathered friends.

I hope your winds calm down, soon. I imagine with all of this snowpack, you're going to have a spectacularly green spring. It's right around the corner.

  2. Our trees looked very much like yours for a couple of days. I think the biggest difference is that we haven't seen the sun yet. Stay safe!

  3. Lucky for you, to see the sun shining! We still had snow showers and gloom yesterday, and it looks like more of the same today - plus the high winds. I guess we are lucky not to have as much ice as you had, though! I miss the sun - I guess it is nice to know that it is still out there somewhere, and not just a rumor.

  4. Beautiful pictures, Carolyn. We had that ice on Jan 29-30... AND we have not seen the sun AT ALL since Jan 31...

Today it is snowing again like crazy --with about a couple of inches on the ground. Don't guess we'll make it to the Sr. Discount at Kroger's today!!! ha

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  5. As always, I really love your pictures!!!

I've been wondering where the sun has been--I'm glad you've found it, so if you could ask it to return to Virginia and chase away the blizzard we are having today, that would be great!! :-))

  16. Your trees look like ours did last year during the big ice storm in Kentucky. It took the city almost 5 months to haul away the branches at the end of our driveway! Hope you haven't sustained much damage.

  17. The wind! Oh the wind was brutal yesterday, even here! Like you, I was stunned to realize that I put on my sunglasses for the first time in February yesterday. Oh, how glorious it was!
